Taking the train from Munich to Venice - day or night?

We are trying to decide whether or not to take the day train or the overnight train to Venice. We are concerned that we will miss some beautiful scenery if we take the night train, however, sleeping thru some of the 7 hour trip might be nice as well and give us more time in Venice. The other thing to consider is price. The cost of the night train seems to be double that of the daytime train, and even triple if you add on a sleeping car. That washes out the hotel savings. Help!

Look at flying on www.hlx.com (HLX Airlines). Flights are cheap from Munich To Venice, and it only takes a fraction of the time on the train...and probably much cheaper than the night train.

Air Dolomiti also flies from Munich to Venice but probably not cheap.

We had contemplated the same thing, but than after checking airfare on HLX (they are changing their name January 15th), we decided to fly. They have one flight a day to Venice from Munich. The flight is about an hour and a half. We paid 39 euros (much cheaper than taking the train, and it allowed us to spend more time in Venice). Though, I am sure, we will be missing some spectacular scenery.

That%26#39;s what we are doing also. I have a printed email confirmation for our flight. I wonder if the name change is going to have any impact on my already purchased HLX ticket?

HLX does look like a good option, but my husband has a desire to drive through the alps. (Muttering something about Hannibal.) MapQuest routes from Munich through Innsbruck and Verona to Venice, and says it takes 4 hours 44 min. Is this realistic in late June? And how is that route? Scenic? Gut-wrenchingly twisty?

Thanks!

Nothing of the above. A four- to six-lane highway, for a big part surrounded with high noise-protection walls, chock full with heavy trucks. It is the main road link from the Northern to Southern Europe and most of the trade goods take this route.

There are more than enough twisty, scenery-rich roads through the Alps, but none of them will get you from Munich to Milan in less than most of the day.

Thanks - very helpful. Husband won%26#39;t like that answer. Is there a scenic, but not scary, route from Munich to Venice, and how long would it take?

There are millions of scenic routes, but I am afraid only you can tell whether they are scary or not...

For one train per day, there are a limited number of one-way no refund/no exchange tickets called the Europa-Spezial. This ticket is offered for the EuroCity train EC 87 which departs Munich at 11:30 and arrives at Venezia S. Lucia station at 18:31.

The Europa-Spezial (AP18) is a 2nd class ticket which costs 29 €. The Europa-Spezial (AP46) is a 1st class ticket which costs 49 €.

Within 60 day of the travel date, you can order and print out this ticket online. Use the DB website and click on ‘check availability%26#39;.
