worried about luggage Munich to Innsbruck train

Please help, we need to travel from Munich to Innsbruck and were thinking about hiring a car for two days but stories about fast cars on autobahns have alarmed us and we are now thinking of catching a train.

We are 2 adults and 1 child with 4 med- large bags (going skiing) Where does one put all this on the train? Are there large luggage racks somewhere?

Also what ticket do I buy ,on the internet or in munich?

Is there 1st and 2nd class etc?

Please help we are leaving in 5 days.

Thank you

Did you intend to hire a car in Munich and drop it in Innsbruck? If so, this is not the best of ideas, since a one-way hire into another country is usually quite expensive. There are direct EC trains from Munich to Innsbruck and some other connections which require 1 change of trains. With a lot of luggage look for the direct connections. There is space for large luggage near the cabin doors and some space for smaller items above the seats. There is 1st and 2nd class, but most people agree that it%26#39;s not really worth to pay extra for 1st class, since 2nd class is already quite comfy and spacious.

Ticketwise I%26#39;d say you%26#39;ll be fine to buy them directly at the counter in Munich, I%26#39;m not aware of any special offers for this trip that would need advance booking (but maybe alabada can comment on that, he%26#39;s as train-wise as you can get)

happy travel!

You always have to change at least once, as Munich airport is connected only by S-Bahn trains.

There are also direct regional trains from Munich to Innsbruck.

I would recommend them

a) cheaper

b) more space for luggage

c) they use the more scenic route via Mittenwald

The S-Bahn and local trains have areas for bulk luggage/bicycles where you%26#39;ll find space for your luggage.

Ticket wise:

1. Buy a Bavaria-Ticket (EUR 25,00) at Munich airport from one of the ticket machines there. This is a day ticket covering all local train in Bavaria. On weekdays it is valid however past 9am only.

This ticket is good for travelling up to Mittenwald.

2. Buy a normal ticket Mittenwald to Innsbruck.

You can do this online through the DB timetable or at the ticket machines. Childs 6-14 are free if travelling with a parent but must be listed on the ticket.

Mittenwald to Innsbruck is for 2 adults (and 1 free child) EUR 19,40.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: MUC airport

To: Innsbruck

Via: Mittenwald

and for the ticket Mittenwald to Innsbruck

From: Mittenwald

To: Innsbruck

Bavaria Ticket is 2nd class only.

The bulk luggage/bicycle compartments are also in the 2nd class.

And with local trains it makes even less sense to upgrade to first class compared to far distance trains.

At this short distance, there are rarely advance discounts. In any case, the few discounted tickets that are available are usually gone a month or so before the travel date. With 5 days to go there are only normal tickets available, which don%26#39;t need to be bought in advance.

There are two train lines between Munich and Innsbruck, one is fast (via Rosenheim) and one is scenic but takes 1 h longer (via Garmisch and Seefeld). Since the direct train via Seefeld to Innsbruck is the regional one, buying the Bavaria Ticket (valid until Mittenwald) and single tickets Mittenwald to Innsbruck might be cheaper than single tickets directly from Munich to Innsbruck.

Do you stay in Munich before or do you arrive at the airport and proceed to Innsbruck? If the latter, bear in mind that the Bavaria Ticket is also valid on the train from the airport to the city.

Thank you all for being so helpful I have now checked the DB website.

We will be in Munich for a few days before travelling to Innsbruck and therefore not using the airport train station.

Three hours is a long time on a train so I may opt for the faster EC and not the longer scenic.Just in case I do though, via Mittenwald is a direct train ...I definitely do not need to get off and change trains?

Also the EC departs from Munchen Hbf and the regional from Munchen Hbf GI.27-36. Are these the same station?

Plus when you go via Mittenwald the DB website asks Mittenwald or Mittenwald(Gr). Are these the same?

If one of you could clarify these points I would be grateful.

Please, check yourself at www.bahn.de!

The station is Muenchen HBf. Gl 27-36 means tracks 27-36, which are somewhat off to the side of the main hall.

%26gt;Plus when you go via Mittenwald the DB website asks Mittenwald or Mittenwald(Gr). Are these the same?

(Gr) means Grenze (border), it is not a station, just an administrative remark. It does not matter what you choose.

Thank you again. I hope you know how much people appreciate your advice.

Hi, if you are worried about the security for luggage on trains - there isn%26#39;t any. However, I have travelled quite a lot by train in Europe and placed luggage in the general luggage area at the end of the car without any problem whatsoever. If you are at all nervous, use a bike lock and lock your bags together so that it becomes much more difficult for someone to take one. But it really won%26#39;t be a problem. Of course, I%26#39;m assuming you aren%26#39;t carrying very expensive luggage that screams out that there might be truly valuable things inside! Have a great trip.
