Another hopeless case needs help in Munich

A friend and I are traveling to Munich for 4 days in March. We have never been to Germany. We are considering a day trip to Salzburg via train, and another daytrip to Neushwanstein, spending the other 2 days in Munich. Have been reading much advice on this web site. Should we bother to go on the formal tour of Neushwanstein? Can you walk or take carriage up to castle without taking tour of inside? How long is the one way trip there from Munich via train? Any advice for restaurants, sites, tours, etc. in Munich and Salzburg appreciated. Any comments at all are welcome.

It depends - if you only want to see Neuschwanstein (and possibly closeby Hohenschwangau castle, with far more interesting interior) you don%26#39;t need a tour. If you want to visit other places (Wieskirche, Oberammergau, etc.) in the same day then you either need a car or a tour bus. Most public transportation in Bavaria is built like wheel spokes, with the hub being Munich; along the wheel rim (e.g. Füssen to Oberammergau) there are only rather patchy bus connections.

Of course, that%26#39;s what many people do. The interior is not as impressive - the works were far from finished when Ludwig II died.

About 2 hours to Füssen, then about 15 min by local bus.

- Salzburg

It is just a short trip from Munich to Salzburg. For train times and prices go to www.bahn.de. Salzburg is a lovely city and different form Munich.

- Neuschwanstein

Actually I wouldn´t go there if you only have 4 days in Munich.

There are very interesting castles right in Munich (Schloss Nymphenburg - very nice inside tour) or on its doorstep (see previous posting). Not as impressive as Neuschwanstein but worth a visit.

- Restaurants in Munich

Go to the Ratskeller right in the center of Munich, on Marienplatz. It is a restaurant under the city hall of Munich and has a lot of atmosphere and charming, very old rooms. Locals go there as well as tourists (they do have an english menu). The %26quot;Schnitzel%26quot; there is very good, but not cheap (around 13 Euros).

Have a good trip!!
