I have seen two I like: Hardebgerg and Golden Tulip Residenz. Any other suggestions around $150 a night? Hate moderne decor. Prefer old, even faded glory, worn around the edges even OK. Also want to stay in part of town where the buildings are old and reeking with architectural detail. Cobblestone streets, pedestrian alleyways. I%26#39;m living in the past, OK?

Hi,
Berlin is a modern city. Large parts have been rebuilt after 1945. So you hardly find narrow alleys or really old buildings in these days. But you could try the follwing:

Both are pretty close to the Kollwitzplatz. There are mainly older buildings (early 20th century) in this area which have been redeveloped is the past few years. Looks really nice now. (on flickr.com you can see some pictures, just search for Kollwitzplatz) Beside of that there are countless nice restaurants, bars and street cafes.

Berlin became only big and important with the industrial revolution and as capital of Germany (first in 1871). Thus most %26quot;old%26quot; buildings are from this time. Only a few major older buildings in between.
Than there was WWII with the allied bombs and the final battle of Berlin (one of the biggest ever). For this the number of old buildings is rather surprisingly high. One reason is that Berlin had even before WWII no alleyways. Thus besides by far the highest tonnage of bombs, Berlin was not the most destroyed city in Germany.
There are old buildings reeking with architectural detail (and bullet holes). But there is no Old Town with cobblestone streets and pedestrian alleyways. That was even before WWII not the case. There is even not a single centre.

Louisa%26#39;s Place on the Ku%26#39;damm is a 5* small older style hotel. All the rooms are suites. Plus it has leisure facilities

Hotel Tiergarten was originally built as accommodation for Prussian officers at end of 19th century and rooms are very high-ceilinged, tastefully decorated. The breakfast buffet is out of this world (incredible for a 3-star hotel). The area is not the most picturesque, on Alt Moabit (near new Interior Ministry), BUT the walk to Bellevue S-Bahn, along by the river is very attractive and the S-Bahn ride to Alexanderplatz offers a wonderful panorama.
