Where to stay

6 of us are going to Berlin for the first time for 3 nights in February. I have read differing views on where to stay but feel none the wiser! We want to do the touristy thing but also be within walking distance, if possible, of a selection of bars %26amp; restaurants. I understand the public transport is very good %26amp; straight forward but we would also like to have a choice of eating %26amp; drinking places fairly nearby. Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks.

First of all your hotel choice depends on your budget.

My favorite hotels in Berlin are the Swissotel and the Hyatt. The Swissotel is very close to Berlin%26#39;s main shopping street where you will also find plenty of bars and restaurants. The Hyatt is right at the %26#39;Potsdamer Platz%26#39;. This area is quite new and you%26#39;ll find some great places to eat and to shop there plus there%26#39;s an Underground station just a few steps away.

Both hotels are very nice, service and food is great. If you go for the Swissotel make sure they give you a room away from the elevator.

I always prefer the area around Oranienburger Strasse and Hackescher Markt since here you find all nice restaurants and bars and at the same time you have all major sights in walking distance. Check these places:

Arcotel Velvet

Hotel Am Scheunenviertel

Hotel Märkischer Hof

Hotel Augustinenhof

Ramada Hotel Berlin Mitte

Have a great stay!

If you want hotels on a budget check out www.accor.com (for Ibis, Mercure etc)

They have 3 hotels on Anhalterstrasse which is just below Mitte (the boundary, where the Wall can still be seen, is Niederkirchnerstrasse, one block up). I stay at the Etap (45€ for one, 55€ for 2) but there are also Ibis and suitehotel next door. A good Italian restaurant and Cafe Stresemann on the corners of Stresemannstrasse/Anhalterstrasse, to get you started.

It%26#39;s less than 10 mins walk to Potsdamer Platz (for shops, more restaurants) and right by Anhalter Bahnhof, which is on S-Bahn line to Friedrichstrasse with Oranienburgerstrasse next stop from that so you can get to that area easily too. Only two blocks from Checkpoint Charlie, and much of rest of Mitte is walking distance.

Another bargain with Accor is Mercure an der Charite which is in northern Mitte, about 5 minutes walk from Oranienburgerstrasse. Mercure is more upmarket than Ibis and I%26#39;ve seen rooms on the website at 49€ for Easter week even. Friends have stayed there and recommend it highly for facilities and location as again you can walk to most sights.

It%26#39;s near U-Bahn Zinnowitzstrasse which is on a good line as it takes you straight to Checkpoint Charlie at Kochstrasse or to Stadtmitte for Gendarmenmarkt area where there are also nice restaurants (Gendarmenmarkt is easily walkable from the other hotels). Change at Friedrichstrasse to take S-Bahn to Alexanderplarz: worth it just for the ride. In fact worth doing that journey from Zoo to Alex as it%26#39;s got great views of new government buildings, statues in the Bode museum glimpsed from a train etc.
