Germany in Late March

Hello!

I%26#39;m looking to spend 5 or 6 nights in Germany with a friend who has never been to Germany. (I%26#39;ve only been once, Koln) We%26#39;re looking to go anywhere from 22 March to 30 March (airfare dictating the travel dates). I think we%26#39;ll be flying into Frankfurt. We were thinking Berlin and Munich and considering getting rail passes to get us around. Would it be worth the extra money to fly direct to Berlin? Any ideas on where to stay? (We don%26#39;t want to go broke, but we%26#39;re not looking for a hostel or shared WC!) Also, are the rail passes for both the U-bahn and the S-bahn?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! :)

%26gt; Would it be worth the extra money to fly direct to Berlin?

Depends how much extra money it will be.

Frankfurt - Berlin - Munich - Frankfurt is quite a big loop through Germany for 6 days.

And the fast trains are not cheap.

Rail passes are only available from 4 (travel) days in 1 month on.

A good deal are the Rail%26amp;Fly tickets. Check if your airline takes part in this program and buy these tickets from the airline/travel agent.

S-Bahn count as DB local trains and are covered by rail passes. You can also use a Rail%26amp;Fly ticket to reach any S-Bahn station.

U-Bahn is not covered by train tickets. Best is to buy day tickets, which cover all local public transport in a city (local trains (RB, RE), S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, buses).

Day ticket is EUR 5,80 for Berlin. EUR 4,80 for Munich (but apart from this is Berlin the cheaper place to visit).

I would recommend to fly either to Berlin and do one or two day trips from there. Or to Frankfurt and from there to Berlin and back. Maybe with visiting a place near Frankfurt (e.g. Mainz) or a place on the route (e.g. Autostadt in Wolfsburg).

Thanks! I think we%26#39;ll probably spend a few extra Euro and go directly to Berlin. I really appreciate your quick and helpful reply! :)
