Will be in cologne for a week - we would like to stay for 2 days and take a train to another area - either in Germany or elsewhere. We were thinking of Paris but if anyone has other suggestions please let me know.

There are lots of places to visit around: Luxemburg, Brussel, Amsterdam, castles - all of them are 2hrs by bus

Are you now staying in Cologne for a week or 2 days?
I.e. do you look for day trips or places to visit after Cologne.
Paris makes only sense if you go there for the remaining 4-5 days of the week.
A classical day trip from Cologne would be the Middle Rhine Valley with its castles:
