Is Munich expensive?

Hi There,

Having just returned from a city break in Krakow (loved it!) I thought it would be nice to visit another European city with my Husband.

Please can you tell me how much pint of beer/bottle of wine costs in a bar and also how much dinner for 2 in a restaurant with drinks would cost?

Is there a lot to see and do in munich and is it a nice city for a city break? Also what neighbourhood would be best to base ourselves? We would like to ba able to walk to restaurants at night. Is Munich quite a safe city?

We have been to London a few times so are used to visiting big cities but not sure exactly how big munich is?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge of the city! I would appriciate any hints/tips and advice. Thankyou x

Hi,

Munich is more expensive than Krakow. I%26#39;ve been to Gdansk 2 years ago and was wondering about the low prices there ...

A beer (Maß) cost appr. 6 Euro, a bottle of wine 16-18 Euro for the cheapest ..., dinner for two (2 courses without beverage) from 40 Euro.

Munich is a nice and safe place and there is much to do: Frauenkirche, Deutsches Museum, Art galleries + museums, shopping, Englischer Garten, castles, ...

Munich ist big, but the touristy areas are small and there is also good public underground, bus + tram

Cheap compared to Krakow or London?

Somewhere in between.

Hofbräuhaus (the most famous beer hall on the planet)

Ratskeller (also a famous place)

While you can find better price/values in town, for such prominent places the prices are moderate.

%26gt; Is Munich quite a safe city?

Statistically one of the safest big cities on the planet.

Oh sounds VERY expensive!! Didnt think it would cost quite as much to eat and drink!! 6 Euro for a pint and 20 Euro for wine plus 40 Euros for dinner for 2 equals 66 Euros!!

Thankyou for your helpful replies x

Naaah, not 6 euros for a pint but for a Maß, that is 1 liter (roughly 2 pints), but you get half liter as well for around 3 Euros (depends on establishment). Munich is expensive for german standards, but quite a bargain compared to London. The 40 Euro range for a dinner for 2 with drinks is about right, of course you can find more or less expensive places as well. Munich is not really a big city (big as London or NYC), but there%26#39;s lots to see, and you can get around on public transport easily. So as long as you place yourself somewhere near an U-Bahn station you can go just about anywhere. Good places to stay are certainly the city center,Glockenbachviertel, Schwabing, Lehel, Maxvorstadt. And yes, it is a safe city.

Hi,

a %26quot;Maß%26quot; is more than a pint: it contains 1 Liter. And of course, you can have cheaper dinner... But I prefer to go for lunch, as there are often fixed-price-menus or other special lunch-offers like a pizza for 5-6 Euro ...

But Munich isn%26#39;t the cheapest place in Germany. The cost of living are high there (rent!) and so are all the other prices ...

Took two clients to the Augustiner up Bayerstrasse for lunch last week. Including food, beers and coffees the bill was just 30 Euros for the three of us. The schnitzel menu was around 5 Euro per meal- but we went for items from the day menu

And Munich centre is walkable side to side (or top to bottom) in about 20-30 mins. Beyond the centre- the historic town- it goes on for miles.

Plenty to do in town; plenty to do immediately around and plenty to do further afield (eg Alps, Oberammergau, Garmisch)

I%26#39;d generally say Munich and Bavaria are reasonably expensive areas to visit. Good cheap hotels particualrly are not easy to find and you can spend a lot on food and drinks. Public transport however is cheap and a pleasure to use and overall the city is lovely and a must visit. Try Prague if you are looking for cheaper options which is an equally super city and beer is around 80p a pint!

Am interested in this post as we are also thinking about visiting Munich for one week next summer.

I would appreciate advice/views on whether there is enough to see and do for this legnth of visit.

We will be relying on public transport, and would hope to do two or three trips from the city to other places. Is it practical to visit e.g. Salzburg using the Bayern-Card? Are there any towns/sights/attractions within easy reach that are must sees?

Also, what sort of weather might we expect in July?

Thank you

  1. Brilliant post. I was told by a friend that Munich is a little on the expensive side but totally worth it, specially with a loved one. So I have booked the Munich city breaks with an operator from London. Really loved reading this post, the way you have asked questions 1st and then elaborated on the answers. Lovely.
