Day Trip to Burg Eltz and Cochem in One Day - train or car

How realistic is it to see Burg Eltz and the town of Cochem in one day if I%26#39;m staying in Koln? Are there any other not to miss towns on the way? We are trying to decide between renting a car for a day or taking the train. Is the train something that%26#39;s do-able or is it more trouble than it worth? Thanks so much.

Possible ...

%26gt; Are there any other not to miss towns on the way?

... but for more there is really no time.

DB timetable

From: Cologne

To: Moselkern

To: Cochem

Moselkern to Burg Eltz is a nice, approx. 40 min walk.

You always have to walk to this castle. If this castle would have not been so well hidden, it would not be one of the best preserved medieval ones now.

Moselkern to Cochem is 18 min by train.

A budget rental car would be also an option:

If you hit a day where only 200 km are included (but this means also a cheaper rate) buy another 100 km extra (EUR 5,00) in advance.

Burg Eltz is awesome, though I%26#39;ve only seen it from the outside since they were closed on our recent visit. For me, it was more of a leisurely walk (was with the kids) of an hour from the Moselkern station to Burg Eltz. Though they do offer a shuttle service, but only during tourist season. Cochem is cool as well. There is Cochem castle there which looks inviting from the town: http://www.burg-cochem.de/e_frame.html

Your day trip is doable but makes for a long day. And I also don%26#39;t think you would have time to visit any other towns along the way.

The problem with the trains are 1) infrequent betw. Moselkern/Burg Eltz to Cochem 2) regional trains which leave at night from Koblenz are usually late, 5-10 mins if you are lucky, up to 30+ mins late. There is an option of taking a direct IC train from Cochem back to Köln, which is probably what I would do at the end of the day.

If you don%26#39;t want to be bound to train schedules, you could rent a car for about € 100 with unlimited mileage for a day. Which is probably the approximate, total cost of all your train tickets. But then there is the cost of gas and overnight parking, and the intangible threat that the car might get scratched or be in an accident ( though nothing to worry about with appropriate insurance coverage). Driving would be fun.

Thanks for your help - it looks like we%26#39;ll rent the car ...
