day driving trips from Trier?

My husband and I will be spending a week this summer staying with a former student stationed at Spangdahlem who is living in Feuerschied, about 20 minutes from Trier. We will be renting a car. We have never been to Europe.

We are interested in the historical sights and beautiful landscapes, and are not that interested in big cities and museums. We would like to avoid the huge crowds if possible. Although we could certainly spend the night away from our home base, what day trips by car from that area would you recommend? What longer trips would be be worthwhile and where should we stay?

I would love to see some castles and old towns and maybe the Black Forest and the Alps (???). We could also take the train or a bus if that is a better way to see a sight. Thanks!

Than there are some nice spots in the Eifel (the uplands Feuerscheid is in), e.g. the Maare (vulcanic lakes) around Daun.

%26gt; who is living in Feuerschied, about 20 minutes from Trier.

40 minutes is more realistic. The distance is 50 km.

Black Forest is already a bit far for a day trip. The Alps are definitly too far.

Nice is the Palatinate Forest (south of Kaiserslautern) with its chain of castle ruines along the German-French border.

Trier is close to several autobahns, which allows you to get to fairly distant places on day trips. Many of the ones mentioned by abalada are well worth seeing. Of course, the road along the Mosel is very picturesque, as are many of the villages. To do them justice, you may want to leisurely go on one day down the Mosel part ways starting from Trier and returning by the autobahn. On another day you may want to go by the autobahn to Koblenz, and then cover the lower part of the Mosel, and finish the trip back to Trier on the autobahn again. The key word for travelling the Mosel is LEISURELY. There are so many nice villages and wine restaurants along the river and along some of the side valleys.

Trier is also well worth spending some time, after you have studied the fascnitaing history of this city.

If WWII history interests you the American cemetery and Memorial is in Hamm, Luxembourg and a fairly short drive from Trier.

Many of the soldiers killed in the Battle of the Bulge are buried there and it is also the burial site of General George S. Patton. Patton%26#39;s marker is at the front of the cemetery and easy to locate. To me and my wife it was well worth the visit.
