Cologne - Berlin, but where to go in between?

Planning a tour around Germany (using rail network). Will definitely be arriving in Cologne, and leaving from Berlin, but wondering where to go in between these two cities.

My current thinking is to go to Mainz %26amp; Weimar, does that sound like a good plan to seasoned travellers in the country, or are there better places to visit?

You can hardly go wrong with that routes. You have basically two routes, one southern (Cologne - Mainz - Frankfurt - Fulda - Weimar - Erfurt - Leipzig - Berlin)

one %26quot;central%26quot; (Cologne - Ruhr area - Hannover - Wolfsburg - Berlin)

and one northern route (Cologne - Ruhr area - Münster - Bremen - Hamburg - Berlin).

With the exception of Ruhr area (to my personal tastes at least), you won%26#39;t do wrong with any of the mentioned stops.

.. and I cannot count, since there are three main routes, not two)
