Better Rate on Pre-Booked Lodging?

I am travelling around Germany in March (with in-laws AND 9-year-old son). The last time we visited Germany (5 years ago and without son) we did not book any hotels in advance but were staying in smaller towns. I am wondering if I will get a better rate on lodging if I reserve rooms online or should I wait until I am there? Our destinations include: Munich, Salzburg, Rothenburg, Bremen, Heidelberg.

P.S. Anyone have a preference of the Mercure City Center or the Platzl in Munich?

Thanks in advance!!!!!

We traveled around Germany this April and we just booked a day ahead of time. We did thoroughly research of possible stops online and knew which hotels were in our price range. We found the prices one day out about the same as those quoted on line.

To make our reservations we called the hotel direct or used the internet to contact Hotel Reservation Service.

A major problem that I see with your theory is not necessary the cost of the room but if a room is available. There may be no rooms if your visit to Munich were during a trade fair.

Your choice of hotels may also be limited if you are considering just 1 room for four people. Two rooms with 2 people each would not be as difficult.

Many hotels now have Internet specials where they add a meal or a sightseeing card – especially on weekends. If you just show up they would not tell you this. It might be advisable to at least check.
