Berlin - hotel recommendation & short trip ideas!

Hello all,

Have left things a bit late, and visiting Berlin next Friday (12th Jan) with my girlfriend. Have not yet booked a hotel.

There is so much information to go through I am finding it difficult to decide.

Can anyone recommend a budget hotel (£50 and less!) that is as close to the city centre / sights / nightlife as possible?

And if anyone has a good link , or suggestions of interesting art galleries, shopping areas %26amp; club destinations I%26#39;d be very happy. I%26#39;m looking for slightly %26#39;left of centre%26#39; alternative Berlin stuff.

Try www.accorhotels.co.uk I usually stay in Mercure Hotel Berlin City Ost. Located in Friedrichshain, right by U-bahn Samariter Str - just a few stops from Alexanderplatz. Nice, modern hotel (admittedly a tad lacking in character as its part of a chain) and located in a small shopping plaza with cafes and restaurants. I usually pay around £40-45 a night booking via their %26quot;hot deals, no cancellation%26quot; option.

The Agon hotel chain is affordable too, I%26#39;ve stayed at Agon am Frankfurter Allee and it is lovely - they tend to book up well in advance though.

Although its not slap bang in the centre, I find it very easy to get out and about from Friedrichshain , admittedly via seeing one hell of a lot of Alexanderplatz station each time!

Mitte area is best for sights; Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg areas for %26quot;alternative%26quot; bars, clubs etc. You should check out Tacheles on Orianenberger Str for a pretty well known, edgy, alternative artists space - http://super.tacheles.de/cms/

My favourite gallery is the Neue Nationalgalerie - http://www.neue-nationalgalerie.de/ - wonderful building and art mostly from the turn of the 20th Century.

Also for me, the best way to soak up the alternative, laid back vibe of Berlin, is just wandering round the side streets of these areas.

Nightlife wise, lots of bars/restaurants down Simon-Dach Str in Friedrichshain and also in Prenzlauer Berg - although I%26#39;m sure Solid8 will be along soon with recommendations for that area!

Regarding clubs - depends what your taste is, I can advise on gothic / rock places as that%26#39;s what I go to Berlin for! I can%26#39;t really advise on other music tastes though.

Hi,

I would recommend a day trip to Potsdam - it%26#39;s much smaller than Berlin and absolutely worth to go. Just read Inside Potsdam - Attractions, there%26#39;s an additional link for some impressions.

Have a nice time ;-)

Friedrichshain better for left of centre stuff but more central for sightseeing is another Mercure with good rates , Mercure an der Charite in Mitte ( a short walk to Tacheles as mentioned above). Most sights walkable otherwise U-Bahn Zinnowitzerstrasse nearby. Friends have stayed there and recommend it highly. Offers of 49€ for room.

My budget choice as a single traveller is Etap Potsdamer Platz on Anhalter Strasse. Two blocks from Checkpoint Charlie and again most sights walkable or S-Bahn Anhalter Bahnhof at the corner (that%26#39;d take you to Potsdam too) 50€ B%26amp; B for one. However for 2 Mercure Charite is as cheap if special offers are on and better facilities there. Etap is more basic (en-suite though); very friendly staff.

Best thing is to check out www.acor.com and compare all options (there%26#39;s an Ibis next to the Etap on Anhalter Strasse for example).
