Hi

I would be visiting berlin with my fiance for 3 days in the begining of jan. i have heard a lot abt this amazing city. would like to know a list of must see places and also i have shortlisted my hotel choice to marriott and swissotel any comments on these hotels would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Re hotel:

Both hotels are perfectly fine and of very good standard. Swissotel is right at major shopping street Kurfürstendamm in the west of the city (centre of old West Berlin). Decent restaurants/pubs/bars close by. Getting to sights and Mitte/Prenzlauer Berg in the east (not to be missed for nightlife) will take around 25 mins by public transport, very convenient and frequent though. Room rate will be lower than Marriott.

Marriott right at Potsdamer Platz (more central, border to the east of the city) - place where the Berlin Wall once was. 10-15 minute walk to Brandenburger Tor, Unter den Linden, Reichstag and Checkpoint Charlie. Shopping mall, restaurants and cinemas (english) close by. Still some sights and Prenzlauer Berg district involve using public transport.

If room rate is no criteria go for the Marriott. Otherwise the Swissotel will also suit your needs - no doubt about that.

Make sure you go on a walking tour which is the best way to see all of the must-see sights.

On the day of your arrival I think it might be a good idea to explore the area around or close to your hotel. You could check out the Potsdamer Platz and the area around there. You also have the Holocaust Memorial, Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag in walking distance.

If you like to get an good overview of Berlin than you could also do a walking tour with Brewers, Insider or Berlin Walks. They all do pretty good and interesting walking tours.

My favourite sights are Berliner Dom, Gendarmenmarkt, Zitadelle Spandau and Schloß (Palace) Charlottenburg. As for museums the Pergamon Museum is a must.
