We (family of four with two children, 17 and 10) are visiting Dusseldorf from december 27th untill 29th, we are staying in the Novotel-Dusseldorf Sud. We like to go shopping and do some sightseeing. Any suggestions on shopping (-malls), sightseeing and things which will interest our kids?

Shopping: it highly depends on your budget. The most well known area is the Kö (Königsallee) in the town center. Most international designer have there stores here (Düsseldorf is well known for fashion-shopping). You will also find a big SATURN which features alll kinds of electronics and so on.
There are some designer outlets as well (i.e. Jades close to the Berliner Allee).
Other things to do: visit the media harbour, the aqua zoo, several art museums (especially K21 - nice architeture).

The Kö has a few small shopping malls on it (with stores and food courts and such). One at the north end--the SchadowArkaden--has some affordable stores such as H%26amp;M. Right by it is the Schadowstrasse, which has some large department stores on it (Karstadt). Alternatively, if you head towards the Rhine, you will pass another two department stores (Kaufhof and Carstadt) plus many smaller stores sprinkled through the Altstadt.
If you want a gigantic, US-style shopping mall, head north to Oberhausen, home of the Centro. It might be too big, though.
The art museums are fun, as is the Film Museum, which looks mostly into how films are made and film history.
