berlin taxis expensive or not?

Hi we are going to Berlin for a long weekend in March 2007 - can anyone tell us if the taxis are reasonably priced or not?

the general consensus on the berlin board tends to be that the U and S bahn- the %26#39;metro%26#39; if you like - are so good and well spaced as to make taxi%26#39;s look like a very expensive alternative, and not really that neccessary.

where abouts are you staying? chances are you%26#39;ll be close to a station and will find it cheaper and easier to use the local transport to get to/from the main landmarks, all of which are well serviced by the transport network with trains that are generally regular and punctual.

exactly. berlin%26#39;s public transport system is perfectly organized and it%26#39;s easy to get around, even at night.

taxis are rather pricy, but i doubt they%26#39;d exceed british rates.

Here the Berlin taxi tariff

That%26#39;s reasonably priced. This is however often made up for by the huge distances in Berlin.

No personal experience. As the others I%26#39;ve always used the public transport system there.

I use taxis all the time in Berlin , i find them reasonably priced and usually friendly. Walking is also great there when time allows

Dear Lynn,

Taxis in Berlin are really inexpensive. I compare this to cities elsewhere in Europe. Compared to other capitals, I even consider them cheap.

More important, I find Berlin taxi drivers to be very honest and courteous. They not play tricks like starting the trip in double fare or inventing bogus surcharges and extras.

For what it is worth: the three cities where, IMHO, the taxi drivers are gangsters are in ascending order Bordeaux, Brussels and Amsterdam.

Berlin is Euorpe%26#39;s most interesting city. Enjoy.

Make sure you check the public transport 72h fare. You will get unlimited use of round the clock bus, tram and taxi for 10 UK Pounds, yes ten.

Berlin taxis might be not that cheap but compared to other European capital cities it is really inexpensive especially if you are used to the prices in the UK.

In Central Berlin I hardly bother with taxis as it is easy to get around with public transport even at night. I usually take a taxi when we visiting friends in the suburbs where the busses/trains are not that regularly.

compared to Uk, Berlin taxis not expensive at all. If you speak a bit of German you can usually get a few euro of the final bill too. Tend to use them only at night to get from bar to bar myself, and I think the drivers are just happy for any type of custom in the small hours

Prices are cheaper than UK, and while it%26#39;s true public transport is very good (and cheap) there may well be a point you need them.

A flight landing at Tegel at 11pm calls for a taxi to my mind, rather than using the buses. A taxi ride from Schönefeld is more expensive because that airport is so much further out but again you might not mind 30€ if you have a late-night arrival because taking the S-Bahn to centre can take nearly an hour including getting to station from airport terminal and waiting time for train, and possibly more if you have to change lines for your hotel.
