Is this a good central location for day trips?

We%26#39;re traveling in late March and are trying to figure out a good central location to stay for 3 nights. We would like to visit Neuschwantstein, of course and Mittenwald. On a map, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is right between the two. We will be traveling by car. After that on to Salzburg for a couple of nights. On Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Good as a base as you%26#39;ll have a car. You%26#39;ll have short traveling times and can also have a look at the sights of Garmisch or see the Linderhof castle on your way to Neuschwanstein or the monastery of Ettal or Oberammergau. There may be snow end of march (although I%26#39;m beginning to doubt that we will see any of it this winter). Garmisch has also a good variety of places to sleep and eat, so there%26#39;s enough choice for 3 days. Happy travel!

Almost any area in Germany can be used for a base for day trips as there is so much to see and do that on a short visit you can only begin to scratch the surface. I recommend staying in the small Villa Jaegerhaus in Hohenschwangau for at least one night to savor the close up views of lit up by night Neuschwanstein Castle. If you choose to stay here, get a room on the first floor up so you can leave your curtains open to savor the view of the castle by night from your bed. The central room is very nice and the NE corner room has views of it and also next door Hohenschwangau Palace where the family actually lived which is also lit up most of the night. The hotel is excellent as is the food in the associated hotel across the road. If you stay here, you%26#39;ll be able to also attend the excellent musical in Fuessen at night. The interior of Neuschwanstein is not that nice never having been completed, but the exterior views are magnificent. You can tour both palaces there and the hotel has package deals including these visits. You can easily find information on the hotel and area by going to www.hohenschwangau.de . All the sights mentioned by Kwenga can also be easily accessed from there by car.

We, too, are going to be in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for 3 nights at the end of April. We plan to visit Neuschwantstein and spend one day in Munich. We were also thinking about going to Innsbruck, but wondering if this will be too much...... Also, we are not sure if we should rent a car or use the train. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is for knb:

You will want to spend at least one day in GP and take the train or cable car to the top of the Zugspitze. (PS: It%26#39;s Germany%26#39;s highest mountain, top altitude just a bit higher than the base station at Copper, but grand views.)

Without car, Innsbruck and Munich are doable as day trips, but you won%26#39;t do Munich justice in one day. Suggest you go to Innsbruck. The train ride is quite scenic. Getting from GP to Neuschwanstein without car is tricky, unless you can find a (localGP) tour that takes you there.

Hi kramfam,

Just wanted to respond to... %26quot;We would like to visit Neuschwantstein, of course and Mittenwald. On a map, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is right between the two.%26quot; Mittenwald is just 20 minutes south of Garmisch and is a much prettier (IMO) and smaller old town than Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We stayed there the last 2 years at Pension Schwalbennestl. Gorgeous views of Mittenwald and the mountains surrounding it from the room balconies, good breakfast buffet and a wonderful owner/host, Frau Bader. As suggested above, Ettal Monestary, and especially Linderhof castle, are excellent places to see while in the area. While at Neuschwanstein, try to visit Hohenschwangau %26quot;next door%26quot;. If you wind up in the Neuschwanstein area late, for a medievel dining experience, try dinner at Gasthof Krone in the Fuessen pedestrian zone. Actually, Fuessen makes a good base also. We stayed there 2 times also, at the Hotel zum Hechten. Not far from Fuessen (30 to40 min.) is the Wies Church, one of the most beautiful churches (inside) we%26#39;ve ever seen.

This information is interesting and helpful. We will be in Germany next August (with a million other vacationers) and are hoping to travel by train. We want to see the castles and the other sights mentioned but are wondering if this is going to be possible without a car. We would love to stay at a small, quaint inn within walking distance of train station and hiking trails - no pool or other %26quot;extras%26quot;, just comfy and clean. First thought of Fussen, then Mittenwald - now confused. Suggestions?

|||

Treplow - thanks for the suggestions. We are staying at Edelweiss Lodge (military) in Garmisch. I am checking into taking a tour from the hotel to Neuschwantstein, and I think we will take the train into Innsbruck. Any other suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

knb,

You may also want to check out Hall in Tirol, just a few miles east of Innsbruck. This is a beautiful old town (we prefer it to Innsbruck) and the pedestrian zone (old center) is just a 5 min. walk from the train station.

singredrose,

For Ludwig%26#39;s Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, Fuessen is just a few miles away. Just a mile from the Castle is the Tegelbergbahn (cable car) with a luge ride (sommerodelbahn).

Mittenwald also has a good cable car, the Karwendelbahn. Both have an indoor/outdoor restaurant/cafe at the top, great alps views and hiking paths.

To start, I%26#39;d suggest going to the websites and asking for their brochures to be mailed to you (we always do this). You%26#39;ll get a list of accomodations with prices, etc. and a good town map with the location each one.

www.mittenwald.de (under %26quot;contact us%26quot; click %26quot;ask for brochures%26quot;

www.stadt-fuessen.de (under %26quot;contact us%26quot; fill out the form and request a brochure of accomodations.

For KNB. Depending on exactly when you stay, there are numerous tours sponsored by the Edelweiss-- all are pretty good. Most have more than one stop. For example, the Neuschwanstein tour usually returns by way of the Weiskirche. Also, the Linderhof tour usually stops in Oberammergau and Ettal. If you haven%26#39;t already, go to www.edelweisslodgeandresort.com and check on the tours. A trip to the Zugspitz is easy, you can walk into town to the Zugspitzbahn or I believe that AFRCE sponsors a tour. Check with the tour desk at the lodge and see if you can buy the tickets there-- usually at a discount.

f you do not have a car, it is not really a very long walk into town, but if you want, there is a bus stop just a few blocks from the lodge. Cost is 1 Euro and the desk in the lobby has a route and schedule. There are some nice hikes easily accessible from the lodge, for example, hike over to the Reisersee and walk around the lake.

Finally, unless there have been some tremendous changes, the food at the Edelweiss ranges from OK to rather bad. The Pullman Place has decent food, but odd hours. Zuggy%26#39;s is a second rate pizza place and the buffet at the Market Place is terribly overpriced and usually cold. Try and eat downtown. The Frauendorfer has decent food and great entertainment. Ili%26#39;s Goldener Angel on the Marianplatz has great food and good prices.

pja60 - Is it Hall in Tirol or just Tirol? Sorry, I just don%26#39;t know the area.

I noticed on the website you provided that the crystal factory is located there. Is it worth visiting? Also, can you tell me what else you might suggest in town? We will be there at the end of April. Thanks so much.

EdUSA - thanks for your reponse. It sounds as if you are familar with the Edelweiss Lodge and their tours. We plan on doing the Neuschwantstein tour with them. You mentioned a town (?) that one stops at on this tour in addition to the castle. Is there any other information you can provide me with this tour? I e-mailed the hotel with my questions, but have not heard from them. Thanks so much for your help.
