Frankfurt - Hahn

Hi,

Boyfriend and I are going Frankfurt for the weekend

Can someone let me know how far is this airport to central?

What is there to do here?

What type of transport takes you to central?

Does many speak english?

How cold is it? Snowing?

Cheers

Jenny

Frankfurt (city) is over an hour from Frankfurt hahn by bus. It%26#39;s a scenic and comfortable ride. Winter has been very warm here so far. English is widely spoken.

But why go to Frankfurt? Mainz, Trier, Bingen, Ruedesheim, Koblenz, all these places are also fairly close to Hahn airport and more romantic than Frankfurt.

%26gt;Frankfurt (city) is over an hour from Frankfurt hahn by bus.

It%26#39;s actually closer to two hours - if the bus doesn%26#39;t get stuck in a traffic jam.

%26gt;Winter has been very warm here so far.

Not any more.Cold front is coming in, the temperatures are dropping down to -5 - -10 degrees.

%26gt;English is widely spoken.

In the airport and in big cities - yes.

Try to learn a few politeness words in German, it isn%26#39;t that hard and will be appreciated.

Mainz, Trier, Bingen, Ruedesheim, Koblenz

Why are these places better

We bought a cheap Flight to frankfurt Hahn so assumed its good to go here.

Have you got any good suggestions?

We are going next weekend

Hahn is approx. 120 km west of Frankfurt.

Frankfurt and a number of more places are connected by shuttle buses.

Frankfurt is good for shopping, museums and nightlife. Also if you%26#39;re into skyscrapers.

Frankfurt is a banking city. And there is barely anything old which survived WWII. Thus not really the most romantic destination.

Esp. if you%26#39;re from London I wouldn%26#39;t rate Frankfurt high. Frankfurt tries to compete with London in some fields (large airport (the real one - not Hahn), banking, skyscrapes). But it%26#39;s just 1/10th in size. And apart from the skyscrapers it can%26#39;t really compete. Thus to visit a more or less completely different place sound more charming to me.

Mainz and Trier are cities where you can find a largely intact old city centre. Certainly more typical for Germany.

Bingen, Rüdesheim are nice medieval towns at the Middle Rhine. Even closer is e.g. Bernkastel-Kues (~ 20 km from Hahn).

This time of the year is however not the best time of the year for these places (off season, none or few tour boats on the Moselle and Rhine, ...)

%26gt; What type of transport takes you to central?

Local public transport tickets do cover all types of local transport in Germany:

- local trains (RB, RE)

- S-Bahn (Frankfurt, Mainz)

- U-Bahn (Frankfurt)

- trams (Frankfurt, Mainz)

- buses

see e.g. for Frankfurt

%26gt; Does many speak english?

Enough to get you around.

%26gt; How cold is it? Snowing?

Next weekend. Around 0 °C mostlikely.

Apart from Hahn itself all the mentioned places lie in the river valley of Rhine, Main and Moselle. Which are amoung the warmest regions in Germany. Snow in these valleys is unlikely. But on the surrounding uplands quite possible.

%26gt;Mainz, Trier, Bingen, Ruedesheim, Koblenz

%26gt;Why are these places better

Because they are more interesting and closer to Hahn. What do you want to do and see when you arrive? Have you looked up a bit about what you should do?

%26gt;We bought a cheap Flight to frankfurt Hahn so assumed its good to go here.

Where?

Guess why the flights are so cheap?

Because you didn%26#39;t buy a flight to Frankfurt. You have bought a flight to Hahn, which is, well, in the same country as Frankfurt.

You do understand that Hahn is almost two hours by coach from Frankfurt, wich is in turn probably one of the less interesting German cities to visit?

|||

This is Ryanair%26#39;s very broad understanding of geography and as already said is why Ryanair%26#39;s flights are so much cheaper. On the same lines people book to %26quot;one of Barcelona%26#39;s airports%26quot; and have to get themselves from Girona or Reus (old charter-flight airports).

For some destinations Frankfurt Hahn is a better bet than Frankfurt nternational ,just as Girona is better than Barcelona for the Costa Brava (and Reus better for salou). Frankfurt has lots of interesting museums which could fill your weekend but that depends entirely on your interests and certainly the other places are a lot prettier.

The good thing is that because these airports are such a distance from the cities there is a regular bus service tied in with flights.

Abaladala:

How far is Frankfurt, Han Airport to Trier and Ruedesheim?

Thanks everyone for your response.

Much appreciated!!

|||

In km or travel time by shuttle bus?

For the latter see

www.hahn-airport.de/default.aspx…

and click on Trier or Simmern.

Nearly all buses to Simmern proceed to Bingen. From Bingen there is a ferry across the Rhine to Rüdesheim.

Abadala - Thanks very much!

Will check it out!!

Cheers
