Frankfurt to Munich

We will be arriving into Frankfurt airport and traveling that day to Munich. I know there%26#39;s an express train, but it seems rather expensive. Any cheaper way to travel (but don%26#39;t want to take all day). Also, is there a train station at Frankfurt airport? Thanks for your help.

Train schedules and fares can be found at the DB website - http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: FRA airport

To: Munich

To see different travel options, change “Means of transport”.

Travel time on direct ICE trains is ≈ 3h 40m and the 2nd class fare is 81 €.

Travel time on without ICE trains with connections is ≈ 4h 40m and the 2nd class fare is 67 €.

Travel time without ICE/IC/EC trains with connections is ≈ 6h 30m and the 2nd class fare is 49.40 €.

A pdf map of the FRA train station can be downloaded at - www.ifeas.uni-mainz.de/Land/Bilder/Train.pdf

1. Rail%26amp;Fly ticket

Check if your airline takes part in the Rail%26amp;Fly program.

bahn.de/p/…railfly_b_to_b_engl.shtml

Than you can buy a Rail%26amp;Fly ticket from your airline/travel agent. These are flat rate tickets from an airport to any train station in Germany valid on the day of arrival or the day after. For Frankfurt Airport to Munich this will be a good deal. This ticket covers also the direct fast ICE trains from Frankfurt Airport to Munich.

2. use local trains

Select at the DB timetable (link in 1st answer) as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot; to ensure this.

a) Sa or Su

Buy a Happy Weekend Ticket (EUR 33,00). This ticket is valid for up to 5 persons travelling together.

b) Mo - Fr

Buy normal tickets from Frankfurt to Kahl. EUR 6,60 per person.

Buy a Bavaria Ticket which covers the journey from Kahl (first stop in Bavaria) to Munich. EUR 27,00. Again valid for up to 5 persons.

As the Bavaria Ticket is valid on weekdays past 9am only, you can only use trains departing past 9am from Kahl.

You don%26#39;t have to change or do anything else in Kahl, it%26#39;s only important that you have tickets covering the whole route.

Buy these tickets from one of the ticket machines at Frankfurt Airport. If you go to the counter, the Happy-Weekend Ticket and the Bavaria Ticket will be EUR 2,00 more expensive.

The Happy-Weekend Ticket and the Bavaria Ticket cover both also all local public transport (U-Bahn, trams, buses).

... cover both also all local public transport (U-Bahn, trams, buses) IN MUNICH.

Thank you all for the information..it was extremely helpful.

There is quite a bit of good information in the other posts but I%26#39;ll add these few comments:

- The DB website is excellent and very helpful. Be sure to indicate the ages of all the passengers and it will compute all discounts that apply.

- If you%26#39;re not comfortable with the website I know from experience that the Bundesbahn ticket agents are very helpful and will point out bargains for you. In the past I have used the website to plan my rail trip and then purchased the tickets from a Bundesbahn ticket window. You will save if you buy a round trip ticket.

- As a general rule, the %26quot;regional%26quot; and %26quot;intercity%26quot; trains are cheaper than the express trains. Also if your trip does not originate during the rush hour fares were lower (in my experience).

- You will probably find that %26quot;second class%26quot; accomodation will meet your requirements and save money. You can reserve a seat or blocks of seats for a small additional fee.

- Using a regional or intercity train your journey from Frankfurt to Munich will take approximately 4 1/2 hours. If your flight to Frankfurt arrives early in the morning, this would put you in Munich at just about the right time for hotel check-in. It%26#39;s very likely that the train will have an %26quot;essenwagen%26quot; (dining car) and that coffee, tea and snacks will be available.

- Some Frankfurt - Munich trains originate at the Flughafen (airport) and if the schedule suits your requirements you will be able to get on your Munich train at the airport. All of the Frankfurt - Munich trains pass through the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and some of the trains originate there. In any case there is a moderately priced subway which runs from the airport to the bahnhof.

- I%26#39;ve done this connection several times myself and have always had good results. Good luck on your trip!
