Fastest route is to follow the autobahns (A1 in Switzerland and A96 in Germany). But keep in mind that you%26#39;ll need a vignette (sticker) for the Swiss and Austrian autobahns (the shortest route goes through a short part of Austria).

A Swiss rental car will have of course a Swiss autobahn vignette.

You can also use the route Zürich - Romanshorn - Ferry Lake Conctance - Friedrichshafen - Munich. Actually not a detour. But less autobahns and the ferry will mean a longer travel time.

??? This route goes not through the Alps.

Weather: max. day temperatures will be between 10 and 30 °C. It can rain. Or not.

1st of May is a public holiday. As this is a tuesday, many will take the opportunity for a long weekend. Thus late afternoon till evening will be busy on the roads.

Ifyou plan to drop your car off in Zuerich, if you pick it up in Germany, there will probably be a hefty drop-off charge. Check it out.
