Cruise Question

Every day I get a little more done on this trip for 21! You guys have been an amazing help! Today, I%26#39;m conentrating on the River Cruise and I%26#39;m a little perplexed.

1. We are staying in Boppard.

2. We have vans and can drive anywhere we need to to get the best stop.

I think that there are both Rhine %26amp; Moselle Cruises.

I%26#39;m looking for your recommended START and STOP point for the K-D Cruise so that we see the most in the shortest time. This is definitley the day we were planning on seeing some castles.

I think we%26#39;d like to get off and walk around a bit and see some neat villages so if there is a great place to stop, I%26#39;d love to know that too.

Thank you!

We are thinking Koblenz to Bacharach and then back to Koblenz.

Is this a scenic cruise?

How long would it last?

Which places should we get on or off?

Setto--Don%26#39;t you hate it when it looks like the post didn%26#39;t %26quot;take%26quot; and then it repeats a few times because you hit return again?

I believe you said that you would have a train pass. A day exploring the middle Rhein works well for the pass, as you can combine the boat trip and a short train ride on it for the day and not have to drive and park and reverse yourself to get the vans. The passes are valid on the K-D boats, not others as far as I know. At the kiosks for the river boats, you will find Rhein guides which are long fold-down depiction of the middle Rhein with photos of the castles and towns along with a brief history of each point along the way. I highly recommend these, as each person can then %26quot;navigate%26quot; as you pass the castles on the cliffs and the small towns. They make a great inexpensive keepsake, as well as make the river journey more meaningful.

Most Rhein Gorge devotees recommend starting at Bingen and going downriver. But since you already are in Boppard, you could go upriver by boat instead: slower, but past the scenic Lorelei and on to the Pfalz, getting off at Bacharach for a stroll around town. Then go back downriver as far as you like. St. Goar is worth a stop, Hwever, the Burg Rheinfals there though heavy with history, requires a good imagination, as the French blew it up rather well in 1796. The view is great, and it is popular, but there is little left of the original castle. I would choose Bacharach over St. Goar if you are getting off the boat to visit a town. Bacharach, though increasingly popular with tourism, still retains a lot of charm, and has the ancient half-timbered buildings one expects when visitng Germany. From there, you could simply take the local train back to Boppard, a few minute%26#39;s trip.

I hope you are including a trip to Braubach and a tour of the Marksburg Castle, as this would be very informative for the students in your class if you have studied medieval history. It is well-preserved and an excellent example of a castle-fortress. You could go downriver on your boat excursion day as far as Braubach, but honestly, as charming as the river boats are, that becomes an all day excursion on the river if you start in Bopard, go up to Bacharach and then return via Braubach. For a large group including high school students, they might get a bit restless if you did all that by boat.

Instead, you might go by van to Braubach, either around via Koblenz or maybe across the Rhein at St. Goar. I believe there is a small car ferry that crosses the Rhein at St. Goar. It%26#39;s been a while since I crossed there. But you could find out for sure and then take the vans across and see St. Goarshausen. There is a falconry and eagle exhibit at Burg Maus a small castle above St. Goarshausen, where eagles, which have been re-introduced to the Rhein after their near extinction there, make free flight forays above the Rhein. The accompanying talk is in German only, however. If you go, the one thing to remember, is the guide repeatedly warns you not to make motions or point as the eagles are released, as they follow motion, and you don%26#39;t want to be wearing an eagle%26#39;s talons as a souvenir! From St. Goarshausenk ti is a short drive down to Braubach and the Marksburg castle.

If the kids need to work off some energy, and the weather is fine, there is a footpath uphill to the Marksburg castle from the Braubach town plaza. There is a small sign pointing up at the foot of the path saying %26quot;Fussweg.%26quot; Otherwise, there is a small tram that leaves from just in town. There is a small fee-can%26#39;t remember how much.

Hope all your excellent planning really pays off and you also enjoy some great weather...
