Neuschwanstein from Munich (car or train?)

Hey all,

My wife and I will be in Munich this June and are planning a day trip to Neuschwanstein. We had originally planned to rent a car the day we were leaving munich (to complete our trip through austria), but now I am wondering if it would be better to get the car a day earlier and drive to the castle. Does anyone know what would be the easiest way to get there? Any directions or info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I would recommend to rent the car a day earlier. It is probably 1,5 hour drive from Munich, maybe a little more. But the area is beautiful. I go biking there a lot and enjoy the landscape. Many balloons start there and it is just a perfect place to relax (well, the castle is busy of course ;-)

From Munich you go via the Autobahn A96 for about 60 km. Then you go on a normal highway (B12) and this one takes you to Fuessen.

But you can also drive around there (it%26#39;s part of the Romantic Street) and see the Wieskirche (church) - near Steingarden - which is quite famous for its baroque style. Maybe you like to see Oberammergau - lots of wood carving there.

Anyway - I think it%26#39;s worth goning around in that area...

I agree with twistersibo, and be sure to stop at the Wieskirche!

On your way back you can go via Leermoos and Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Garmisch - Munich Autobahn (A-95). This is a very scenic trip.

Also, look at the map: On the way from Fuessen to Leermoos, there is a small unnumbered road off to your left (east), that goes directly to Schloss Linderhof, another of King Ludwig%26#39;s palaces. You can decide on these routes at the spur of the moment, depending how much time you have. From Linderhof you would drive to Kloster Ettal and on to the Garmisch - Munich Autobahn.
