farnkfurt hahn airport?

Hi all, will be flying into frankfurt hahn airport on a monday at 3pm. i want to get a train to either lucerne or interlaken. havent decided yet. what i need to know is how can i get from this airport to the main train station in frankfurt? How long does it take? i presume i am right in thinking that this airport is quite a journey out of frankfurt and that there is another main airport nearer to the city. i need to organise my times so that i dont miss my train connection. all help appreciated.

There are shuttle buses from Hahn Airport to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (main railway station).

Travel time is 1,75 hrs. Single ticket is EUR 12,00.

Alternatives are shuttle buses to Mainz or Ludwigshafen/Mannheim/Heidelberg.

The latter are %26quot;closer%26quot; to Switzerland. In Mannheim (the main railway knot) the shuttle bus does not stop near the Hauptbahnhof, thus better to use the shuttle bus to Ludwigshafen and use the train to Mannheim (a 5 min train ride).

DB timetable

From: Frankfurt

From: Mainz

From: Ludwigshafen

To: Interlaken Ost

To: Luzern

Hahn is a really small airport. Thus no problem to get a bus 20-30 min past landing.

If you like it cheap (but not making it to Interlaken or Lucerne on the same day)

Hahn dep. 15:40 shuttle bus to Ludwigshafen (EUR 16,00)

Ludwigshafen Hbf arr 17:20 (mostly the buses arrive earlier)

Ludwigshafen Hbf dep 17:24 (with local trains on the Baden-Württemberg Ticket Single (EUR 18,00))

Freiburg Hbf arr 20:55

You could travel with the Baden-Württemberg Ticket also to Basel Bad Bf or Konstanz (for Lucerne an alternative). From both places you could travel on the next day with domestic Swiss ticket to your destinations. Disadvantage is that you will arrive pretty late in Basel or Konstanz.

The Baden-Württemberg ticket covers in Freiburg and Konstanz also all local public transport (trams, buses), but not in Basel.

Thank you alabada, all of this information is very helpful. i will look at all possibilities. i want to get to switzerland as quickly as possible so maybe going to frankfurt might not be the best option ?

|||

Sorry - better than Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is Frankfurt International Airport anyway.

This means 15 min less travel time with the (same) shuttle bus. And you have also good connections directly from Frankfurt Airport train station.

DB timetable

From: FRA airport

For the fastest route you have to play around a bit. Via Ludwigshafen is the shortest route, but means a longer (rather slow) bus trip. While an ICE highspeed trains does Frankfurt Airport to Mannheim in 30 minutes.

Shortest travel time will largely depend on the departure times of the shuttle buses and the connection times afterwards.

%26quot;i want to get to switzerland as quickly as possible so maybe going to frankfurt might not be the best option ?%26quot;

Ryanair flies from London Stansted to Friedrichshafen, Germany and that would place you a short train and then short ferry ride across the Bodensee (Lake Constance) to Switzerland (Romanshorn) where you could then take the Swiss railway on to your destination(s). The airport at Friedrichshafen is small and quick to get out of.

Hi marcopolko, thanks for that. i do know that would be a better option but i am flying from ireland and got a good deal to frankfurt. i hadnt really planned on switzerland at the start but then i decided to go there. i will probably stay in frankfurt or somewhere near to frankfurt hahn the night before i fly home. i am leaving from frankfurt hahn on a ten am flight so i would have to be pretty near. is there anywhere nice that anyone could suggest? thanks again.

Just returned from an overnight stay at Hahn. This place is 2 km from the airport - inexpensive, comfortable, and has a terrific breakfast buffet for 5 Euros. They%26#39;ll pick you up for free and redeliver you to the airport for 2 Euros. Free internet and coffee all day.

You can stay in Frankfurt or Mainz and take an early shuttle bus. Schedule wise this is no problem.

Or stay directly near Hahn Airport. E.g. where Russ suggested.

There are some nice spots near Hahn, e.g. Bernkastel-Kues (~ 20 km). But these places are not connected well with Hahn by public transport.

I believe that Lucerne has the largest Guggenmusik gathering, which is carnival related, and if this event happens while you are there I personally wouldn%26#39;t miss it. The unusual music and the bands with their elaborate costumes and possible masks are delightful.
