Any advice appreciated as to whether it is really do able in a day. What are the really must do %26amp; see things in the city?

Munich is definately doable as a day trip from Salzburg. Regional Deutsche Bahn trains link the two cities at a rate of approximately one train per hour; the journey takes around two hours. It is advisable to buy a Bayern-Ticket for the journey. It costs €27 and is valid from 09:00 until 03:00 on the following day; on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays it is valid from 00:00. You can use it to travel anywhere within the German federal state of Bavaria by regional trains (RE/RB). It is also valid on the trains of the S-Bahn within Munich. As Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is a denoted as a border station, the Bayern-Ticket is also valid to/from there also. If you are travelling alone, there is a cheaper alternative called %26#39;Bayern-Ticket Single%26#39;, valid (unsurprisingly) for one person only for the same period as the ordinary Bayern-Ticket. I am not sure if you can buy a Bayern Ticket from an Austrian ticket machine since the ticket is promoted by Deutsche Bahn. There is however a Deutsche Bahn counter at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof; there may well also be a Deutsche Bahn ticket machine, but I am not certain.

As for the sights in Munich, take a look at the following link:

Bavaria Ticket Single is EUR 19,00 if you buy it from a ticket machine.

At the counter the Bavaria Tickets are EUR 2,00 more expensive.

A Bavaria Ticket covers all local trains on this route (RB, RE). IC/EC or ICE trains are not covered.

The Bavaria Ticket does also cover all other local public transport in Munich: S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses.

The Bavaria Ticket is valid

Mo-Fr from 9am till 3am next day

Sa, So from midnight till 3am next day
