From Offenburg to Heidelberg

Trying to plan a short stop (between 1-2 hours) on the drive from Offenburg to Heidelberg to break up the monotony of the drive...

Would LOVE to see a castle or walk a short (1-2 mile) trail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

The world heritage Maulbronn monastery, the best preserved medieval monastery north of the Alps, isn%26#39;t too far off from that route. It is a short distance east of Karlsruhe and a short distance north of Pforzheim.

Could you please inform me on how to get from the airport in Stuttgart to Bad Wimpfen. Can you taxi? Cost? Distance? Also, do you know of a small town by the name of Hirrweiler? What is that distance from the airport? Would I hit it on the way to Bad Wimpfen or the other way around?

Thank you

ShiresAZ,

From the Stuttgart airport arrivals go downstairs to the S-bahn station. The first level down will have machines where you will have to use euros to purchase a ticket to the Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof. Then go down another level to catch the S-bahn train which there should be about four an hour. At the hauptbahnhof you can take a train to Bad Wimpfen which is just north of Heilbronn. There should be 3-6 trains an hour to Heilbronn unless when you are traveling on a day with a reduced number of trains. As Bad Wimpfen is not a destination listed in my railway time table from Stuttgart, I don%26#39;t know how you proceed from Heilbronn by train, but Bad Wimpfen has a train station. I%26#39;m sure that the ticket agents or inquiry desk at the train station in Stuttgart can give you all the necessary details and also your cheapest ticket option. If there is a train ticket (not S-bahn) machine at the airport you can purchase the entire ticket there, or buy a single (probably 18 euro) or 2-5 user (probably 25 euro) Baden-Wuertemberg day ticket that will probably cover all the transportation you will have to use as only regional trains are on this route. The person at the Stuttgart tourist information office (down the corridor to the right after exiting the luggage pick up area) should also be able to give you advice.

Also, you can go to any train question in the Germany forum and follow that advice using the train internet website substituting Stuttgart-Flughafen as departure point and Bad Wimpfen as destination.

A taxi expense would be expensive as the distance is probably about 75 km (45 miles). You might consider also renting a car. Most of the way can be driven by autobahn, but Hwy 27 is scenic going by the vineyards along the Neckar River and besides Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg, Besigheim, and Lauffen are all nice to visit. This would facilitate visiting Hirrweiler.

Hirrweiler is about 30 km away from Bad Wimpfen to the SE the other side of Heilbronn on Hwy 39. By train from Heilbronn, Obersulm appears to be the nearest train station which is about 6 km (2.5 miles) away. Loewenstein, nextdoor to Hirrweiler has some sights worth seeing. There are castle ruins and a church.

Taxis are always a problem in more rural Germany as you usually have to call them, so make sure that you have a number to call when you want to be picked up and to return after being dropped off.

You can look for the entire itinerary from Stuttgart airport (Stuttgart Flughafen) to Hirrweiler at www.bahn.de. The trip takes 2-3 hours and costs 14,20 EUR one way. For the last leg from Willsbach to Hirweiler you would have to use a bus or an AST (Anruf-Sammel-Taxi) - something between a bus and a taxi; runs to a fixed schedule along a fixed route, but only if there are enough people (-%26gt;call in advance). You have to phone them at least 30 min before the planned departure to reserve a trip. It is of course much cheaper than a taxi; the 14,20 already include AST use. Unfortunately I don%26#39;t have the phone number.
