Train or Car

I am going to fly into Frankfur in March.

I need to get myself and another traveller to a small German town near the Danish border.

The one way train fare is 118 Euro per person, which strikes me as expensive.

I checked out Budget and they offer 166 Euro for a four day car rental.

This could be the better deal as there are two of us and I would be able to drive back to Hamburg from where I fly home.

Does anybody have an idea how much gas would be. This is about a six hour drive.

Thank you for any information.

Check if the airline you fly to Frankfurt with takes part in the Rail%26amp;Fly program (most major airlines do).

This is a cheap flat rate ticket valid to travel to all railway station in Germany. And with Frankfurt to near the Danish border you%26#39;ll really maximize this ticket.

You can get such a ticket from your airline or travel agent.

HLX sells the Rail%26amp;Fly ticket for EUR 19,99. Other airlines are a bit more expensive. Guess EUR 30-35.

To Hamburg airport normal tickets will be mostlikely cheaper. If you can travel past 9am or on a Sa or Su a mini group ticket (2-5 persons) will be the best deal. Even directly to Hamburg Airport (if you use the S-Bahn or U-Bahn to Ohlsdorf and the bus 110 from there).

On driving: Do you arrive with jetlag?

Driving in Germany needs full concentration. The whole time.

There is a high traffic density and cars drive really fast.

Traffic jams are not unlikely. Esp. around the bigger cities. The tunnel under the Elbe in Hamburg is a well known bottleneck.

Don%26#39;t forget a few breaks on a 6 hours trip.

And don%26#39;t rent a too small car for such a long trip.

Thanks a lot!

Great information!

BTW rental cars are often cheaper from wholesalers, like autoeurope.com
