Todtmoos

Hello,

I am going to Todtmoos soon, please advise on a way of getting there from Stuttgart airport.

You could rent a car and drive or take the train. I don%26#39;t know if you can buy train tickets at the Stuttgart airport, but if you can%26#39;t, you can buy an S-bahn ticket at the macjhine one level down from arrivals and go another level down to the platform for the S-bahn to the Hauptbahnhof in Stuttgart where you can buy the necessary train tickets. Depending on the ticket costs and number of people traveling, a Baden-Wuerttemberg day ticket may be the least expensive way as it is something like 18 euros single or 25 euros for 2-5 people with travel possible on weekdays only after 9AM with restrictions that only regional trains can be used. It will also cover other transportation such as U-bahns, S-bahns, and buses in Stuttgart and other places in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

To access the German train website and make queries about the route go to one of the other recent discussions about rail travel in Germany and go to the website listed there and substitute traveling from Stuttgart Flughafen (airport) or Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (main train station) to Todtmoos (which is in the Black Forest of Baden.-Wuertemberg and nowhere near Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps).

Marcopolko,

there is no need to buy an S-Bahn ticket and then a ticket further on - Stuttgart Flughafen is a DB station like any other and you can buy a ticket from any DB station to any DB station.

In any case, while there are relatively frequent buses from Kirchzarten to Todtmoos through the High Black Forest, it might be easier to reserve a rental car in Freiburg, take the train to Freiburg and drive the rest of the way - though would easily work without. Btw. if you stay in a hotel in the Black Forest you get a guest card (automatically, free of charge) which gives you free transportation on trains and buses in the Black Fores area for the duration of your stay.

Living in Stuttgart there has never been a need for me to purchase a train ticket at the airport so I%26#39;ve never really looked to see if there is a machine there. It should then be by the S-bahn ticket machine. If the original poster has any problems or needs advice at the airport, the Stuttgart tourist information office is down the hall to the right after exiting the luggage pick up. I know they can sell S-bahn tickets but don%26#39;t know whether they can help with train tickets also. I%26#39;m leery about using any ticket machines as some purport to have English as a language but the screen remains in German, at least some of the S-bahn ones, and I%26#39;m thinking of the one at the airport in particular. At least at the Hauptbahnhof you can go to the information desk for advice at the same level as the train platforms where the ticket machines are, or go down a level and deal with an actual ticket agent although the ticket will then be slightly more expensive, but their advice on the cheapest ticket option could possibly save money.

I recently used the Nürnberg VGN ticket machines and Stuttgart VVS ticket machines. On both, I pushed the English Union Jack flag yet the instructions and ticket selection options on the next screen were still in German.

I knew which tickets we need and I know enough German to get by but others may have problems using the machines. Also, travelers should be aware that tickets purchased from a machine may only valid on the day of purchase.

%26quot;Also, travelers should be aware that tickets purchased from a machine may only valid on the day of purchase.%26quot;

I%26#39;ve never seen anywhere on a Stuttgart local transportation machine a statement of the validity of the ticket in either English or German. After arrival by S-bahn at the Stuttgart airport I bought a three zone ticket from the machine to return to Stuttgart after picking up our daughter. I was shocked to see the ticket had a time and location printed on it and because I wasn%26#39;t quite sure of its validity for using it on a later date if we desired to use a taxi instead of the S-bahn to go to our home, I inquired at the Stuttgart tourist office. My suspicions were correct and I found that the ticket had to be used within 2 hours, but the tourist office exchanged it for a normal 3 zone ticket which could be used at any time. We usually buy multiple journey 1-3 zone tickets from a travel agent near our house that are valid anytime in the future and have to be punched on the U-bahn or bus, or on the S-bahn platform before entering the S-bahn train. We always buy train tickets from a travel agent or a person at the station because we want to know exactly what we are getting and don%26#39;t want to mess with a machine where the options aren%26#39;t clear.

It%26#39;s interesting noting that if you are using a local ticket machine in Stuttgart and enter the destination you aren%26#39;t necessarily given the cheapest option. If the destination is within 3 U-bahn or bus stops, the K(urz) ticket is only 1 euro while otherwise the machine will give you a one zone ticket for 1.80 euro automatically and if you crossed zones the penalty would be even larger.
