howdy again :)
I always like to read novels about/set in the place i%26#39;m travelling in so i was wondering if anyone knew of anything berlin-related e.g. down and out in paris and london for paris/london etc! :)

Fatherland, by Jack Higgins i think, is set in an alternate 1964 (i think), a world where the Nazi%26#39;s won the war and in the lead up to Hitlers 75th birthday, a downbeat cop finds an dead jew in Berlin.
a brilliant read and an intreaguing look into what might have been....
The Odessa File, while not being set in Berlin, is an interesting look into 1970%26#39;s germany.
there are many fine works based in and around Berlin, but these are the only two i can think of right now! may i suggest you try searching Amazon?
Film-wise, %26#39;Whoa Lenin%26#39; is great for early 1990%26#39;s views of Berlin, and a humourous introduction into the complex issues surrounding the fall of the wall.

Hi,
you could try:
Little Man, What Now? by Hans Fallada (1932)
or...
Berlin Alexanderplatz: The Story of Franz Biberkopf by Alfred Doblin (1929)
:-)

For late 19th century Berlin, novels by Theodor Fontane. %26quot;Effi Briest %26quot;is the most famous though less of that is set in Berlin, but there are others also translated into English (maybe only available second-hand) Try amazon as they also link you to second-hand dealers in %26quot;marketplace%26quot; which I%26#39;ve used quite a bit.
Look at Inside Pages Berlin for the Reading list which I did as that%26#39;s got novels and travelogues/autobiography.
Another I%26#39;ve just thought of : Christa Wolf %26quot;Divided heaven%26quot; (about the Wall). She lived in East Berlin so you have that perspective on the situation. Will keep thinking..........
That film was called %26quot;Goodbye Lenein%26quot; in original title; was the title changed in Britain? By the way (as you%26#39;re staying Auguststrasse), in the film you see Tacheles (the semi-ruin on Oranienburgerstrasse) as it used to be (wih no glass wall at the back).
