Going to Octoberfest '07, I'm clueless.

Hi, I wonder if anyone would give me some info on hotels in Munich during this festival. I%26#39;m not sure how the festival itself works. Is it one big beergarden or do all the cafe%26#39;s and bars participate? What area of Munich should we stay in to be in walking distance of the heart of the festival? Should we make reservations now? Any light you could shed would be greatly appreciated. Also is it an absolute madhouse?

%26gt; I%26#39;m not sure how the festival itself works.

It takes place on a large open air area called %26#39;Theresienwiese%26#39;, which will be studded with beer tents and fun rides during O%26#39;fest. The entrance to the area is free as is the entrance to the beer tents, but you only can eat and drink there if you manage to get a seat, which can be problematic

%26gt;What area of Munich should we stay in to be in walking distance of the heart of the festival?

Somwhere round %26#39;Theresienhöhe%26#39;. But not being within walking distance is no problem either, public transport will get you there and back from nearly anywhere in and around Munich

%26gt;Should we make reservations now?

Definitely YES

%26gt;Also is it an absolute madhouse?

also big YES as far as the beer tents are concerned. The fairground itself is busy, too, but can still be enjoyable just walking through and have a look around.

I think a lot of places are getting booked up already. The prices will(unsuprisingly) be very inflated during the Oktoberfest.

The main area of the fest is Theresienweise I think. We stayed in a hotel called the Tryp which is about 5 minutes walk from there. The hotel was fine for us - mid range price and facilities. Good sized room and helpful reception staff. The following is a very helpful site about everything to do with a trip to Munich.

Thank you both for the good advice.
