Germany-Austria-Swiss Trip Itenerary... Help

My wife and I will be traveling to europe from June 15-30. We have 15 nights, and really want to fit in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. I have been looking over things for a couple days and this is what I have so far. Pelase let me know what you think, and add any suggestions or tips you might have.

June 16- Fly into Berlin... Stay for 4 nights

June 20- Pick up rental car. Drive to Dresden for 1 night stay.

June 21- Leave Dresden and drive to Munich for 4 nights.

-Day trip to Dachau

-Day trip to Neuschwanstein, rest of area

June 25- leave Munich and drive to Salzburg for 2 nights

June 27- Travel through austrian alps and stay near Innsbruck.

June 28- Drive to Zurich and stay two nights

June 30-Drop off rental car at Zurich airport and leave for US.

So there it is. My main question right now is whether to try and fit Salzburg in. Is it worth the drive to go see it? If not, we could drive south from Munich and spend more time near Neuschwanstein and the austrian alps. Also, I would love to see Vienna, I just don%26#39;t see how it is possible this trip.

Please let me know what you think.

My suggestion would be not to drive so much. Rent a car when you arrive in Munich for a few day trips (esp. into the Alps). No need to drive just to get from Berlin to Dresden or from Dresden to Munich. By train you will be faster anyway. You certainly don%26#39;t need a car in Munich or in Zürich. Unless you just like driving...

In any case, dropping off in another country will incur a huge additional fee.

Salzburg is also a good daytrip from Munich and in my eyes well worth a day - but again, driving is certainly not necessary.

It would be even possible not do drive at all. Even Neuschwanstein can be easily done by public transport.

In the bigger cities a car will be rather a hassle. All these cities have outstanding public transport systems.

Esp. nonsense with a car:

Dachau - it%26#39;s inside the Munich public transport network

A mini group partner day ticket Munich XXL wich is good to travel around Munich and Dachau is EUR 11,50.

Zürich to Zürich airport by car

I would drop the car at least when arriving in Zürich.

Zürich (from any train/tram/bus stop) to the airport is CHF 6,00 pp.

You could also return the car e.g. in Lindau (Bavaria) as a small detour on the route from Innsbruck to Zürich. Thus avoiding the steep international drop off fees. And Lindau is a nice place. The main railway station is directly next to the harbour of this island.

Ok, guys... thanks a lot for the responses, they definately helped my planning.

So, no need to even think about a car until we are leaving Munich.

I would like to explore the austrian alps area on my own via car. But, dropping the car off in Lindau will be awesome, so we can save money and just take the train to Zurich.

Do you think a regional europass (Germany-Swiss) for 5 days would be the best buy? Or just buy the tickets individually since we won%26#39;t be on the rails that much?

Also, Since the good hotel rates we want in Munich begin on 6/21, would you stay five nights in Berlin, or use that extra night somewhere on the way to Munich? Is Dresden worth a night?

No need for that.

On arrival in Beriln, buy a one-way ticket from Berlin to Zürich via Dresden and Munich (it is not a big detour from the shortest route, therefore the tiket agent is not likely to protest). Since it is an international ticket it is valid for 2 months.

After arrival in Munich, you can rent a car for a day or two and drop it off at Lindau, where the trains from Munich to Zürich stop anyway.

For Dachau etc., just buy local transportation (MVV) tickets.
