Bacharach--A Few Questions

We are thinking of booking the Hotel Am Markt in Bacharach for 2 nights in August, I have a few questions if I may

1. Can we get to Bacharach easily by car? My impression is that we can take the rhine river road to most of these small towns.

2. Is the Hotel Am Markt a suitable hotel for 2?-not looking for luxury, just cleanliness , good service and close to shops etc?

3. Is there more than 1 boat to say St. Gore and Rudesheim so that we can get back by boat instead of having to take the train back?

4. How often do the trains run from say Rudesheim?-Do they go back in the evenings?

many thanks

another question --does anyone know if there is free parking at that hotel?--or how much is paid pkg in the town?

Can%26#39;t answer you the questions about hotels and parking, but you can look up the boat schedules at www.k-d.de and the trains chedules at www.bahn.de

The trains run on most German main lines every hour.

Bacharach can be easily reached by car. We drove from Frankfurt to Bacharach with no problem.

I cannot tell you anything about Hotel Am Markt. We stayed at Hotel Hillen for two nights in Bacharach. Hotel Am Markt would be close to shops as Bacharach is small enough to walk.

Yes, boats go frequently. We took a boat cruise from Bacharach to St. Goar, which is a great scenic short ride, and stayed in St. Goar for a few hours and then hopped back on a return to Bacharach.

If I remember correctly we had to pay to park at Hotel Hillen because they had no private parking so we parked on the main road in front of the hotel. The parking price is reasonable however.

Hotel am Markt is is in the very center of the oldest most charming part of Bacharach. I haven%26#39;t stayed there, but stayed at a hotel just down from there, and am guessing that because it is on one of the many narrow little streets in Bacharach, you will be able to unload your luggage at the door, and then park in a different location. Everything is so compact that this is not as bad as it sounds. You would be staying at a nice family owned hotel.

Bacharach is perfect for boat excursions up and down the Rhine. Ruedsheim is across the river, so if you plan to go there, plan to take a later boat back from either St. Goar or Ruedesheim, or if by train, you would go down to Koblenz station or up to Mainz to get back. Probably easier to check your schedule and make sure when the boat coming back downriver returns to your departure point.

The trains are a regular part of village life along the river, as well as the K-D boats. School children even commute to their equivalent of upper level schools by the local train. You can use the trains to visit any of the villages along the river, or go on to Koblenz or Koeln, if you like. However, for me, the most relaxing route is to become familiar with the K-D boat schedule and really %26quot;kick back%26quot;. You can take a picnic lunch or eat or drink on the boats if you wish.

Going to Ruedesheim, which is upriver, is away from the scenic Rhine gorge and Lorelei. If you do this trip only one day, may I suggest that you go downriver toward St. Goar, which is through the scenic part, get off at St. Goar and explore, then either go on to Boppard or Koblenz . From either, one could return by train. It would be a walk from the dock at Koblenz, to the train station; the train station at Boppard is just uphill from the dock. There is a small ferry at Boppard which shuttles people and a few cars across the river. You could cross and return. Great place for some photos from on the river. I%26#39;m assuming you have a guide book for Germany which describes the Middle Rhine villages and their history. Also, buy the fold-down map of the Middle Rhine at the kiosk on the pier. It is great for describing the castles and villages along the way and makes a nice inexpensive souvenir.

If you reserving for this August, it might be the time of the Rhein in Flammen, which is a sensational fireworks display at night on the river. This may cause problems with reservations along the Rhine.

I hope not, because I never tire of visiting these places (it is my jet lag first 2 days when I go to Germany because it requires very little effort and is so rewarding).

--%26gt; date/town for fireworks. The website is in German, but I think for checking date and town it%26#39;s ok

Bacharach is very easily accessible by car -- the main road runs between the railroad line and the river. Park in the small park on the river bank, or across the main road facing the rail lines, and walk into the town. (don%26#39;t forget to pay the Parking!)

Hotel Am Markt is very clean and pleasant -- we stayed there in June. They will give you a parking pass that will allow you to park in the lot that faces the rail line until late morning (sorry, don%26#39;t remember what time).

The restaurant was okay, but I think was a victim of a very warm June -- the place was abuzz with flies...we covered our plates with napkins between bites, as it was the only way to keep them off our food. I don%26#39;t think it was a lack of hygiene, but unpleasant just the same. There are three weinstubes across the small main street that look to have quite good menus.

Visit www.db.de for train schedules -- clik the English flag for trasnlations.

many thanks to all who answered or who posted earlier notes---As a result of this info and the pictures, we cancelled a hotel in Koblenz and booked at Bacharach instead. Better to be in town and in one of the most sought after towns to visit. Thanks

how far is it from Bacharach to the Frankfurt airport by car? and by train?

|||

Italy Prog--It%26#39;s about and hour and a half by train from Frankfurt (either main train station or airport) to Bacharach. Trains go via Mainz about once an hour. It%26#39;s a local regional train that ends up in Koblenz. Nice view of the Rhine if you sit on the right side going out.

Basic cost is about 20 Euros, though there are probably some regional discounts available.

Thanks! Any recommendations on places to stay in Bacharach?
