Help for a first timer, please!

Please could someone give me some advice! My husband and I are thinking of going to munich for a few days in May. We hope that it will be starting to warm up then but not be to hot!!! We have looked at the %26#39;Dorint Novotel Muenchen city%26#39; hotel. Is this hotel in a good area? We would like to be in walking distance from restaurants, bars and the Marienplatz (Sorry if spelling wrong!!). We would also like to take a day trip but not sure if we would go to the %26#39;Eagles nest%26#39; or not? Would like to go to Dachau camp but understand we could do this cheaper ourselves rather than a tour? Does anyone know how much a taxi to there and back would be? Also how much do you think we should budget for each day for food, drinks etc? We would have a sandwich for lunch but prob have a 2 course dinner each maybe with some wine then a couple of drinks!!! Hopefully it isn%26#39;t to expensive! We are from Scotland so not used to London prices!!!! We aren%26#39;t in to going to posh restaurants just nice food!

Thankyou for any help and advice, it%26#39;s much appriciated!!!

A taxi? I guess maybe 40 Euro each way... but you wrote you would like it to be cheaper than a tour. Of course you can take the S2 to Dachau and take a bus or walk from the station... which will cost about 4 Euro per person one way.

If you do not have a car then a trip to Eagles Nest is not practical

Salzburg is a good day trip - its fairly quick and easy to get to by train which are frequent and you can use the Bavaria ticket which is 25 euros for up to 5 people after 9am weekdays or midnight weekends

Munich is generally not cheap for food and drink like say Prague or Spain but you can find some nice places at reasonable prices

Best deal to get around with public transport are mini group day tickets. Valid for 2-5 persons. And they make already sense with 2 persons.

mini group day ticket (valid from midnight till 6am next day)

MVV inner zone (= Munich) EUR 8,50

MVV XXL (Munich and nearby towns like Dachau) EUR 11,50

MVV whole network (e.g. to reach Munich Airport) EUR 17,00

http://www.mvv-muenchen.de

There is also a day ticket covering whole Bavaria.

Bavaria Ticket EUR 27,00

Two restrictions

- only local public transport

Actually the same like with the above. But for longer distances this plays a more important role. Thus far distance trains like IC, EC or ICE are not covered.

- validity

Sa, So: midnight till 3am next day

Mo-Fr: 9am till 3am next day

Eagles Nest is quite far for a day trip. And on the Bavaria Ticket only realistic on a Sa or Su.

Neuschwanstein Castle is closer and also in the Alps

http://www.neuschwanstein.de/

http://www.fuessen.de

(bus Füssen to Hohenschwangau is covered by the Bavaria Ticket)

As are Garmisch, Mittenwald and the Zugspitze (Germany%26#39;s highest peak).

http://www.garmisch-partenkirchen.de

http://www.mittenwald.de

www.zugspitze.de/zugspitze/rundreise_en.php

(the Zugspitze cogwheel train is not covered by the Bavaria Ticket, but it gives you EUR 4,00 discount. Thus round trip will be EUR 33,00 per persons. That%26#39;s compared to similar high mountains in the Alps rather cheap.)

prices

Hofbräuhaus (the most famous beer hall on the planet)

hofbraeuhaus.de/en/01/speisekarte_schwemme_e…

Ratskeller (in the city hall)

http://www.ratskeller-muenchen.de/

(Click on the flag for the menu in English)

These are two really famous places with tourists. Thus you can find less known places with a better price/value relation. It%26#39;s of course also possible to dine more exclusive and more expensive.

%26gt; with some wine

In Munich? The %26quot;beer capital%26quot;? There are better (and cheaper) places for wine in Germany.

You will be fine in the area were the hotel is, stayed many times in the area in various hotels (just got back again!) however you are not in the centre but only a 10/15 min walk or you could get the underground. I would also check out the prices for the Holiday Inn next door as well. As for eating out you are spoiled for eating places, depends what you like to eat. There are quite a few local bars around you and the Paulaner brewery is 10/15 min walk along the street as well as the Hofb/keller along the road. Gast also do good European food, again just near the hotels.

Eagles nest is not possible to do on a day trip, you can get to Dachau by train as said, easy to do.

As for budget, it depends again on your tastes and what you like to eat and drink, you can get everything from basic McD (please don%26#39;t!) to local inexpensive food, Lunch time set menus in lots of restaurants are good value and some serve late into the afternoon. You are not going to be paying high London prices (unless you want to!) But Munich is not as cheap as other city%26#39;s and not as expensive as some, having just got back from both Munich and Prague (and paying 70p a pint for fantastic beer) Munich is more expensive in comparison but that%26#39;s they way it is. If you want more info just let me know
