35min to change flights??? is it enough?

I am catching a lufthansa flight from paris to new york in early January, and have to change planes at Munich. However, when I check my ticket, there is only a 35min gap to change planes. Is this enough time, or am I likely to miss the flight? I have been told by my travel agent that it is a connecting flight.

If the airlines knowingly ticketed such a connection you probably will be fine. At least the airlines will be responsible for your completing your journey, not you. If your flight from Paris is delayed before departure and you will miss the connection, try to have them put you on a direct non-stop flight from Paris to NY with one of their partner airlines. With possible weather delays, it%26#39;s impossible to predict what will actually happen in your case when you travel in January.

Seeing that it can take 15 minutes or more just for people to exit the aircraft I hope your connecting flight is at a gate close by.

Prague, Berlin or Amsterdam?

I have 3 days in March, 2007 and I have to decide between Prague, Berlin and Amsterdam... London and Paris are already in my plans. Which of these 3 cities would be the best to visit on my fisrt time in Europe? Help...

Berlin is certainly the best choice if you%26#39;re interested in modern history (3rd Reich, cold war etc.), if you%26#39;re looking for culture (more than 50 theatre shows every day, more than 170 museums etc.) and maybe some nightlife.... another option would be Barcelona which is actually one of my favourite cities in Europe.

I agree with Solid 8 that Barcelona would be another good choice, precisely for the reason that I said Amsterdam or Prague in my reply to your other post on this question. All are smaller scale than London/Paris/Berlin and so in three days you get a good overview.

Berlin is my favourite to keep going back to, because of the culture, hsitory etc. 3 days is nowhere near enough in my view. Also both Berlin and Prague would have better weather April-Sept.

New Year

We are three couples approaching sixty but who are still very fit and are going to Berlin for New Year, We are staying at a hotel beside the Zoo and would like suggestions as to what the best thing to do is as midnight approaches. Should we book in for a meal or enjoy the outside festivities?

I am there for Xmas but sadly not for Hogmannay, the street party sounds fun if a bit daunting for the sheer number of people. The Intercontinental has a restaurant with a view of it all but the price is a bit insane. You could always get a clubfloor room there for the night with the same view and have a private party there.

Is there a typo in this name? Doesn%26#39;t sound German too me. Esp. the %26quot;mbd%26quot; letter combination is not pronouncable in German at all. Either typo or missing vocals. Or not German. Danish minority in Schleswig-Holstein?

Leaving airport in Frankfurt with passport

I will be arriving in Frankfurt Germany (with an 8hr layover)... wondering if it will it be possible to leave the airport to sight-see with just a valid passport? I appreciate your help!

It depends very much on what country this passport was issued by.

US, Canadian or Australian citizens don%26#39;t need anything except a valid passport to enter Germany.

You have to go thru imigration when you arrive at Frankfurt airport...if you pass that you are free to go wherever you wish.

driving from/to munich airport

I am looking into renting a car to drive to Tirol(Mayrhofen) from Munich airport. Is it relatively easy to get out of the airport and on a highway? I am also supposed to pick somebody up at the airport two days later. Do they have one Internationa terminal and parking? I am just trying to figure out what I am doing ahead of time, since I never drove in Germany.

Mayrhofen - Munich Airport and back is 400 km (and will also need 4 hours).

It makes no sense in Germany to have a domestic terminal. Maybe an EU terminal. But it%26#39;s rather common to group airlines/alliances together.

Things you have to consider:

a) Munich

which is between the airport and Mayrhofen.

Traffic jams also on the autobahns around Munich are normal during rush hours. In the holiday season there can be also traffic jams towards the Alps.

b) winter

Rent a car with winter tyres. To drive into the Alps without winter tyres is insane in winter. Will cost extra however.

c) Autrian autobahns

You need a sticker (vignette) to drive on the Austrian autobahns. Can be bought at the rest stops before the border.

It makes however no sense to avoid the autobahns. And don%26#39;t use the route via the Achenpass. Shorter but not faster. And considerably more winter related sticks than to drive on the autobahns to Innsbruck (no need to use a pass to reach Mayrhofen).

You could take the route via Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Mittenwald is one of the nicest towns in the Alps.

Not a detour, but more country roads, this will add some travel time.

If you use the autobahn route you could make a small detour to Prien at Lake Chiemsee to visit Herrenchiemsee New Palace.

If you have not driven in Europe before, or in Germany, you may wish to check out

It is an extremely well written site covering everything from traffic laws, customs, signage etc in Germany, and by extension, most of Europe. Covers also the use of trains, buses, S-Bahn, U-bahn, the different types of parking payment methods etc. It%26#39;s pretty easy to navigate and warns you about some of the bad driving habits tolerated in the US that are illegal in Germany and may get you fined (passing on the right, tailgating, %26quot;rude%26quot; driving etc)

If you are going to Mayrhofen via A8 to A93, then a short side trip to Prien and a ferry to Herrenchiemsee is certainly warranted. Beautiful palace. If you go by A95 through Garmisch and Innsbruk, then you definitely want to stop and walk around Mittenwald. You may also, depending on the weather, take a short detour at Oberau (just north of Garmisch) to the Ettal Abbey (beautiful church) and the town of Oberammergau. Oberammergau has some beautifully painetd buildings and a lot of pleasant shopping.

Munich airport is very easy to get in and out of. The only problem that I have ever had is in trying to get the right road to the car rental return after filling up the tank at the airport gas station. It is not as clearly marked as it could be but it still is only a minor problem.

As you walk through the Munich airport on arrival, look for some kiosks with green leaflets with a big capital M. These are the airport guides and are very through, including outside roads, etc. Car rental desks are in Terminal 1, so if you arrive in 2, you will have to hump your luggage across the central plaza to Terminal 1. If in winter, have a jacket in carryon, the plaza is covered from rain, but wide open to the temperature!

Give yourself plenty--plenty --of time if using the A9 or A99 anywhere near morning or afternoon rush hours. The traffic jams (stau%26#39;s) there can make all the traffic problems caused by the Big Dig look like picnics!

Prague, Berlin or Amsterdam?

As a complete contrast to Paris and London, I%26#39;d have to say Prague or Amsterdam, though I love Berlin (but it needs more than 3 days to do it justice). Prague and Amsterdam are much smaller : Prague is built on several hills which offers wonderful viewpoints; Amsterdam is off course dead flat but with the charm of the canals. You can get a good feel for both cities in 3 days.

Logistically it%26#39;d be simpler to do London, Paris, Amsterdam and then you could treat yourself to Berlin and Prague on your next trip, with Potsdam as a %26quot;must %26quot;as day-trip from Berlin.

Admittedly my last visit to Prague was 6 years ago but we found that the tourists were concentrated in very specific parts and, as in Barcelona, there are places even in the centre where most tourists don%26#39;t venture.

Prague is a knockout architecturally and I love the varied perspectives you get with it being on hills (like Lisbon: another idea? Solid 8 has mentioned Barcelona too!). March not best weather for Prague though.

I have just come back from Berlin, have been to Amsterdam but not Prague but thought that Berlin has everything in abundance. Culture, museums, so much history you can touch it , shopping, great food and drink and people that seem eager to please. What more could you ask for? I thought Berlin was brill and would go again and again. For me it is on a par with London......

How to ge to Angleterre Hotel, Berlin, Germany

What should 4 17 y/os do in Frankfurt?

Hi there, well during christmas a group of 4 of us decided to go somewhere and that somewhere is Frankfurt. We will be there for 2 days and 1 night.

What things should we do during the day, good parks,shopping centres and other attractions?

And what should we do at night ie night clubs?

We are staying at the Le Meridien Parkhotel, which is near the train station

Why Frankfurt? In my opinion (I know, citizens of Frankfurt won%26#39;t like it), the city is quite boring...

Attractions in Frankfurt are the Palmengarten, the Roemer, the german filmmuseum, Zoo, Goethehaus, Paulskirche. For shopping the Zeil. Shopping-Center are mainly in the suburbs, like Main-Taunus-Zentrum, Norwest-Zentrum or Hessen-Center.

For nightclubs / discotheques, I have to tell you, that you are only allowed to stay till midnight, because you are under age...

Have not lived in Frankfurt for a number of years now - but the city was never boring.

Nightclubs for 17yo - yes they might chase you out after midnight, but they might not (they never did if you looked a little older %26amp; behaved alright). Just don%26#39;t get completely legless. Check with the concierge of your hotel which clubs are %26#39;in%26#39; - might even be some live concerts going on the night you are there.

Daytime - in December Frankfurt has a huge Christmas market, most of %26#39;Zeil%26#39; shopping area , so are the areas of %26#39;Liebfrauenberg%26#39; and %26#39;Roemer%26#39; - not only good for pressie shopping but also great for food %26amp; drink. Most %26#39;Frankfurters%26#39; will spend either lunchbreak or go after work for a bite%26amp;drink.

Across the river %26#39;Sachsenhausen%26#39; has a large number of pubs and bars to hang out - some with live music, again the concierge should be able to point you to some trendy places - you could walk across the %26#39;Eiserner Steg%26#39; bridge after checking the x-mas market near the %26#39;Roemer%26#39;.

Shopping - big department stores along Zeil, more boutiques and specialty stores in Goethe strasse (pricey) %26amp; Fress Gass (food %26amp; deli).

Museums - all along the river bank in Sachsenhausen, Film museum, architecture, sculpture, art. If you are into natural history Senckenberg museum near Frankfurt University is a much smaller version of London - lots of stuffed animals and some interactive displays.

If weather is good, boot tour along the Rhine valley to Ruedesheim, castles, wine tasting etc.

Zoo - excellent little zoo with a great %26#39;reptile house%26#39;, I really used to enjoy the %26#39;night critters%26#39; .

Have a good time

Living is a good nightclub and easy to find, its at the bottom of the skyscraper which is the headquarters of the euro I think it fits about 1500 people in with a mix of music.

There is also cocoon club which is away from the centre and this is about 3-4 thousand people, but expect a long wait to get inside I think it plays mainly techno.

There is Odeon which is quite small it%26#39;s like a little house in a park but it%26#39;s good, it plays house music mainly.

There is cookies aswell which is a small hip hop club, there is quite alot of trouble here.

For things to do in the day, well I can%26#39;t remember which one it is but you pay a couple of euros and there is a viewing platform on top of one of the skyscrapers it%26#39;s like on the 54th floor so you can get a good view of Frankfurt which is good.

Berlin on Christmas Eve & Christmas day Dinner??

Any suggestions for Christmas Eve locations to wander, and recommendations for Christmas Dinner..? Any previous Xmas Day hotel Diners in this City?

I will be there as well, I suspect there will be very little to do on 24th. Many restaurants close , as this is the big evening. On the 25th most restaurants are open, the hotels have special menus. I am thinking of doing lunch at the Palace hotel which about 90 europp. as I don%26#39;t want wear suit or black tie in the evening. Last year I was in the Intercontinental(same this year) and people were arriving in black tie ,so too formal for me.

I have no idea - contrary to the train station the hotel is not a major landmark of the city :-) I don%26#39;t think though that it is a problem that needs solving before your arrival in Cologne - contrary to getting the train tickets to Paris, where cheaper fares sell out very quickly.

Christmas markets in the rain

We are leaving next week for Bavaria and Salzburg for Christmas and it looks like quite a few rainy days in the forcast. Do the Christmas markets stay open in the rain? Are any of them sheltered? If they aren%26#39;t, it seems to me like it would be hard to enjoy. We had hoped to go to Christmas markets in some small towns like Dinklesbuhl but if it%26#39;s raining we could change our plans if larger cities would have more shelter. Or am I just being a spoiled Southern Californian?

Christmas markets are open no matter what the weather. In some there may be overhangs near the booths or places that you actually enter. You should realize that for many %26quot;rainy days%26quot; in Germany it may rain for only a short time with long periods of just clouds, and much of the rain may only be a very light drizzle. Wear appropriate clothes for damp conditions, and if it happens to rain really hard just visit a nearby store or restaurant until the rain stops, which probably won%26#39;t be for that long. A real rainy day probably also wouldn%26#39;t be that bad as the Christmas Market shouldn%26#39;t be overcrowded.

January 6 holiday

I will be in Berlin over January 6, which I think is a public holiday. Will there be holiday happenings--and such as? Or will most things simply be shut?

Jan 6th is only a holiday in catholic regions, eg. Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg but not in berlin.

Solid 8, it%26#39;s Epiphany (Dreikönigstag).

Here in Spain it is a MAJOR celebration as it%26#39;s when most families do their present-giving rather than at Christmas. The Three Kings and their pages parade round town on the evening of 5th Jan then get on with delivering the presents overnight. I hadn%26#39;t realised it was a public holiday in some parts of Germany as well, though.

Oh, I had no idea it wasn%26#39;t really celebrated there. Will Christmas decor still be up until then? I%26#39;ll be coming from Munich on Silvester, then to Vienna, then Prague, then Berlin. I%26#39;m going to miss the Christmas markets.. but was hoping to catch a bit of German holiday festivity..

christmas will be over then... about 60% of the Berliners are atheistics (incl. me) and just ca. 30% christian (9% catholics). For me christmas is over on Dec. 27th and as said we don%26#39;t celebrate the Dreikönigstag (thanks Lynda! ;-) ). On Jan. 6th I already think of the next christmas....

Christmas dinner in Berlin

Any suggestions on a restaurant or somewhere else for a couple to have dinner and celebrate on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day? We are staying near Ku%26#39;damm.

Not far from your hotel you%26#39;ll find two areas with heaps of restaurants and bars. One is the area around Savignyplatz/Knesebeckstr./Grolmannstr./Bleibtreustr., the other one is around Winterfeldplatz/Goltzstraße. As we mainly spend the Christmas holidays with our families I%26#39;m not sure which restaurants will be open and which wont. Anyway, there will definitely quite a few open but not all of them might be offering a traditional Christmas meal.

A couple of the restaurants in that areas I like are

Amico at the corner of Grolmannstr. and Goethestr.

Mar-Y-Sol at the corner of Savignyplatz and Knesebeckstr.

Opposite the Mar-Y-Sol is a nice Greek restaurant but I can%26#39;t remember their name right now

Maybe you%26#39;ll get some ideas from berlin-tourist-information.de/winterzauber/… as well.

You should visit the restaurant Knese at Knesebeckstrasse / Kurfürstendamm. They serve traditional german und Berlin styled food and over Xmas of course traditional german goose dishes.

Last year Mar y Sol on Savigny platz was one of the few places that open and not serving a 5/6 course menu, on Christmas eve. We had a very nice meal at Dressler on Ku%26#39;damm on 25th. Probably again this year too. Enjoy Christmas

Eurail Train Schedule online..I FOUND IT!!!

I was told by some, that you had to buy this or that it was too large to have on line

But I found it!!!!

I know that it is just the major cities and I do not know how long this is valid for...but it at least can help with planning.

What I really don%26#39;t understand: when you have the excellent (and COMPLETE) schedules online through national rail services such as bahn.de - why do you want the castrated version from Eurail?

Because you can actually see as a whole and piece it together

instead of constantly punching in various dates and times till you hit the combination and variables that work for me!!!

I just had a look ath the Eurail timetable and found it extremely inconvenient to use... but I guess it depends on what one is used to. It might help in getting the first impressions of travel times and frequencies.

As to the validity there is a %26quot;small change%26quot; 2nd weekend of June and a %26quot;big change%26quot; at the 2nd weekend of December. Thus the timetable will be valid, most probably, until the first change.

In any case, if there are interruptions due to track works, or similar things, you still will have to go to the respective national rail website to find out.

Oh absolutley...I am just using to get an idea of what I can do, how long it will take and write it all down, then go the the websites and see if it all fits!!!

I guess it is just how my mind works.

Where to go in March for 9 Days starting in Cologne???

Hello All:

There are Six of us going arriving March 3 in Cologne and leaving March 11.

We are in our early 30%26#39;s...so we like a little luxury...but of course for the best price!

We are thinking more of taking trains than driving.

We would like to see classic Germany ie, small quaint towns, maybe a river tour, see some castles (maybe spend a night in one?)

I know this is a lot to ask but if anyone has done something like this and could help...I would be forever grateful.

For what you want to see, heading south from Cologne is the way to go. You%26#39;ll find lots of information on the rhine river valley on this forum, including hotels, castles, river cruises. Another suggestion is the Mosel valley going from Trier to Traben-Trarbach to Cochem to Koblenz (or vice versa). It is very pretty as well, lots of small villages, castles, lots of fine wine and dining and a tad less touristy than the rhine valley.

Also nice: The Neckar valley going from Heidelberg to Heilbronn (river cruise, castles, small towns, the whole set)

These are all wine growing regions, so you stand a chance of somewhat warmer weather in March than e.g. round the black forest.

I did start looking into Romantic Road...I was thinking staying in Cologne for 2 days...romantic road for 3 days and Salzburg for two and Munich for 2 days...last night back in Cologne.

We are thinking of renting two cars and driving...Does this seem feasible?

quite ambitious, but doable, depends on how much driving you want to do. Maybe consider to do car and train trips.

It could look like this:

Sightseeing in Cologne (no car), rent car and drive the rhine river valley. Then either join the RR in Würzburg or drive down to Heidelberg, drive the Neckar valley to Heilbronn and join the RR in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Drive to Füssen/Neuschwanstein (if you like to see it), maybe stop in Dinkelsbühl on your way. Drive to Munich via Reutte (Austria), and Garmisch. Drop the car in Munich, no car needed in Munich or Salzburg, dirty cheap train ticket (Bayern ticket) can be bought for the Munich-Salzburg trip. Take train from Munich to Cologne. Just a word for the romantic road: it%26#39;s not the road that is romantic , it%26#39;s the stops, so you don%26#39;t miss a lot if you just want to get from Rothenburg to Füssen and take the autobahn. If you want to have stops in between, stick to the RR. If you run behind schedule, skip Salzburg, things could get a bit cramped. Early March can still mean snow and ice on the roads esp. near the alps (Füssen, Garmisch, Munich,Salzburg), just keep that in mind!

I know you can go to website and type it all in, but I like to look and work it all out at once. I also know that the time table does change, but I would at least like to get an idea.

Also if we buy Rail passes just for Germany do happen to know what the supplement charge is to go over the border into Salzburg?

No way :-)))

There are several thousands of trains running through Germany every day. There is a printed schedule book available at most stations - called Kursbuch - which weighs about 5 kg and costs about 25 Euro. I somehow doubt you would want to carry this with you.

Most if not all stations have small printed timetables (for free) for any given connection. But they usually only contain local trains and not long distance ones.

The %26quot;Kursbuch%26quot; is a bargain - if you want to fill a book shelf.

Comes in 8 volumes, a railroad map and a train number booklet. And this for just EUR 19,00.

There are nearly 40.000 trains per day in Germany. The (online) DB timetable does however know also about virtually any other public transport in Germany: U-Bahn (metro), trams and buses. And even some boat schedules. Altogether some 700.000 %26quot;runs%26quot; per day.

You can also use the DB ticket machines to query the timetable when on the road. There are also some others means like WAP, but this is a bit complicated and the instructions are mostly in German only.

The border between the German and Austrian railway systems is not identical with the political border. Salzburg Hbf is an Austrian and a German station at the same time. Thus you can reach it with a rail pass covering Germany.

With 6 persons you qualify already as a %26quot;group%26quot; - not just a mini group (2-5 persons). You can get discounts up to 70% for group tickets. It is however not possible to buy such tickets online.

You could also make use of the mini group day tickets good for local trains only. As they are only for up to 5 persons you would need 2 of them. Or a mini group plus a single version if existant (like for the Bavaria Ticket).

That%26#39;s an option for shorter trips in first place. E.g. like Munich to Salzburg or Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle.

A further plus of these tickets is that they cover also mostly also the other local public transport (U-Bahn, trams, buses) besides the local trains (S-Bahn, RB, RE, IRE). Something normal train ticket or rail passes won%26#39;t.

Fussen March 6-7

Salzburg 7-9

Munich 9-10

Cologne 10-11

Please let me know if I am staying too long or too short in one place because of my limited time contraints.

We too are doing this trip in mid April, Cologne---%26gt; South (wife and 6 yr old), so this information is helpful, bottom line is taking the train easier than driving, meaning taking the train means a lot of luggage pushing in towns to get to your hotel vs just taking it out of the car%26#39;s trunk. Also do you recommend booking hotels in each town or can you just %26quot;wing it%26quot; upon arrival?

According to yeego.com website, at the %26quot;Marin Palace%26quot; hotel in Istanbul Turky: the rate for 1 standard room, 2 sleeps half board, will be 79$ per room per night.

However, I called the hotel booking center, and replyed that the price is 160USD.

Therefor I%26#39;m perplexed and don%26#39;t know how to continue from here.

Any advice?

it%26#39;s no problem to get there. Just take the TXL express bus (dir. Alexanderplatz or Mollstr./Prenzlauer Berg). Get off at Alexanderplatz and from there it%26#39;s just a short walk (as long as you mean Rathausstr. in Mitte, 10178).

We are just back from Berlin on the 7th Dec we stayed at the premier city con (now NH Frankfurter Allee Hotel) it%26#39;s actualy in Lichtenberg. We got a taxi from the airport (24 euro) but you can do as already suggested and get to alexandraplatz then go downstairs and take the u-bahn the line is the U5 (brown) in the direction of Honow and you can either get of at Frankfurter Allee or stay on to MagadelanaStrusse (sorry for the spelling) the hotel is in between the two stations.

You can either get a 48 hour pass for the U-bahn and S-bahn for 14 euro or a 72 hour pass for 19 euro. They are well worth the money as it is 2.10 euro per single journey. There is also a city pass for 39 euro which lets you in to vistor attractions at a reduced rate.

Rarely visited but interesting places in Berlin

Guys,

No doubt there are certain must-go places in each town, especially in such town as Berlin. But I was wondering whether anyone could point out some places in Berlin which are not very popular but are in fact very interesting to visit from their perspective.

Will be grateful for any directive!

Depends on your interests of course but I would recommend two which tend to be overshadowed by better-known counterparts. The Berlin Wall info centre (and memorial) at Bernauerstrasse is to me more moving than the more propagandistic presentation at Checkpoint Charlie. Bernauerstrasse is where the houses were right on the border and people threw themselves from the windows to escape.

Similarly, Centrum Judaicum in the Neue Synagoge is less well-known than the Jewish Museum but shows what happened to the Jewish community in Berlin specifically.

If you are interested in the history of GDR, the new DDR-Museum near Domaquaree on riverbank opposite the cathedral is well worth a visit. For more details on the Stasi (secret police) there%26#39;s an info centre in Mauerstrasse in the city centre and you can also visit the Stasi HQ out at Normannenstrasse (u-Bahn station magdalenenstrasse). Labelling is in German in both places but some material in English sd be available at the info-desk.

You might also be interested in the Deutsch-Russisches Museum in Karlshorst.

We also like Brücke Museum as we are big fans of German expressionism. And Alte Nationalgalerie for older German painting (Gemäldegalerie is foreign Old Masters).

Depending on how long you are in Berlin, wd suggest day-trip to Potsdam too.

Good question. We were in Berlin in the summer and discovered a few places where not many tourists visit and others where there are many tourists but are definitely not to be missed.

For the latter, you no doubt will visit the Holocaust Memorial. For us, the fact that so many people may be within it, but remain unseen from outside makes it even more poignant. Once you enter and walk through the stones, you see fleeting glimpses of others within the maze but still get a sense of being alone – very well thought out and you cannot fail to be moved. It’s also the best place to see and understand the differences in architecture between the East and West.

For less visited places, you should go to the site of what was once the largest synagogue in Berlin and from where up to 50,000 Jews were deported to concentration/extermination camps. It is a sad place, but important historically. It also has a plaque for every synagogue that existed around the time of the Kristallnacht, most of course have long since gone but a few remain. There is a sculpture and a railway carriage which gives you an idea of the conditions that the people were transported. Here is a map and a link (sorry, I could not find many):

The Führerbunker, supposed to be Hitler’s last HQ and the place where he committed suicide, is another place you may want to visit:

On a lighter note, the carillon in the Tiergarten is very nice – make sure you go when the bells are ringing as the building itself is not that spectacular. This site mentions that they only ring for a few minutes, but when we were there it must have been over half an hour.

Lastly, we would highly recommend visiting the beautiful palaces, gardens and buildings of Sanssouci near Potsdam – it’s a easy train ride from Berlin and gives you a whole different view of the area.

Dear friends,

I am travelling alone on the 8th of April to Kassel for 10days.

I couldnt find any information on clubs, cafes, and wine bars.

Whoever is been to Kassel or is living there, I would like to learn more about night life in Kassel. and wether it is safe walking in the streets of Kassel on my own? (I am 27 year old guy, 6 foot tall)

Closest Well Preserved Castle to Cologne?

We%26#39;ll be in Cologne a short time next April and would really like to see a well preserved castle. Is Burg Eltz our best bet or is there a castle just as well preserved which is more convenient to Cologne?

and they are both great. i would prefer burg eltz, if i had to choose one. though i did not get to tour inside since it was closed. it is impressive. and would recommend the walk up to it as well, about an hour from the moselkern train station.

I you are driving, Burg Eltz would be a great choice. If taking the train, then Marksburg is an easy trip from the Cologne man station to Braubach, then a hike uphill, or a tram ride, to the castle. It is huge, well preserved, and maintained by a castle history society (I forget the name in German). There are other interesting places to visit near Braubach, also. If driving and visiting Burg Eltz, you could continue up the Mosel Valley to Cochem to see the castle there (it was %26quot;renovated%26quot; to Victorian tastes, but still a nice visit)

Burg Eltz is a wonderful castle to see.. its one of my favorite ones in Germany. Also you may consider taking a drive up the Mosel River where you can also find other famous little castles..

Bernkastel also has a castle.. You can take the boat from Trier up the Mosel tour Bernkastel, its a nice little city, sample some of the best Mosel Wine and walk up to the castle. I used to take this trip often when I was younger and I remember my mother always would take me to the castle.. its a nice view from up there and they also have a restaurant. Its worth the trip.

One hour at the Hauptbahnhof

Hello!

I%26#39;m traveling from Amsterdam to Prague and back. That gives me a bit over one hour at Berlin Hauptbahnhof on both trips. What do you recommend to do there?

Eating at McDonalds? Shopping? I don%26#39;t know... There is not so much to do as the Hauptbahnhof is built in a desert...and 1 hour is not enough to do any sightseeing. Maybe you could take a S-Bahn trip to Alexanderplatz and back. It%26#39;s just 3 stations (5 minutes) and it%26#39;s a really nice tour!

The Hautpbahnhof was built in a wasteland (due the wall) close to the government district.

You could walk to the Chancellery, Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate.

Brandenburg Gate is 1,5 km from the Hauptbahnhof.

Don%26#39;t wander too far! The wide open spaces and the huge buildings let the distances appear shorter than they are.

Instead of travelling to Alexanderplatz and back you could proceed to Ostkreuz and from there by S-Bahn S41 on the S-Bahn Ring to Südkreuz.

The trains Berlin to Prague stop also at Südkreuz station. Travel time via Ostkreuz is approx. half an hour. Single ticket is EUR 2,10.

The east-west S-Bahn tracks and the S-Bahn Ring are mostly elevated and provide good views on Berlin.

Actually I%26#39;d still say take S-Bahn to Alexanderplatz AND back to Hauptbahnhof, to take it all in. I%26#39;d suggest sitting on left-hand side of train both times: on way to Alex you go past Charite hospital complex, Brecht%26#39;s theatre am Schiffbauerdamm, and you can see if you can spot synagogue dome; on way back look out on other side for Reichstag and govt buildings.

It%26#39;s actually nice to do whole stretch from Zoo to Alex but that%26#39;s a bit more complicated for you as Zoo is 3stops in the other direction. However the S-Bahn is very frequent as you can get on any train on that route. I%26#39;ve only done a bit of the S-Bahn ring but that was down an embankment, no aerial views.

Online Bayern Ticket

I have purchased a Bayern Ticket on-line for travel next week. I have printed a piece of paper with the heading “Auftrag – Detailsicht”, which gives the date of purchase, date of travel, my name and a 6-digit code, which appears to be the ticket number. I have also printed what I presume is a receipt, with the date of purchase and the same 6-digit code, but no reference to the date of travel. I also have an email confirming the purchase.

We have sought the advice of a person from Germany and they couldn’t see anything else to print, but they were not familiar with the Bayern Ticket. Is the piece of paper “Aufrag-Detailsicht” sufficient for me to travel, or do I need to print something else?

Auftrag: Detailansicht means %26quot;(your) order: detailed view%26quot;. I don%26#39;t know if this is enough since it hardly ever makes sense to buy Bayern-Ticket online or in advance.

The email you received should have a link. On clicking the link you should be able to receive the same PDF file, which is the ticket. Usually, online tickets in Germany come as PDFs, are printed and taken along - no receipts necessary.

Bayern Ticket is an %26quot;off-line%26quot; ticket.

DB will ship it to your address by letter.

With some tickets bought online it%26#39;s also possible to collect them at the ticket counter or from ticket machines.

But I%26#39;ve some doubts if this is possible with online bought Bayern Tickets.

Auftrag - Detailansicht is just a (detailed) receipt for your order.

This one is not sufficient to use the train. And as the Bayern Tickets are not refundable also not of much other use.

Late arrival from Schonefeld to Swissotel with Infant

Hi

I an arriving at 22.20 in Schonefeld with Girlfriend and 21 mth old boy .I am just wondering

at this time of night wanting to get to the Swissotel If it is worth just getting a taxi,If so how much is the fare or are the trains at this time no hassle to find and which is the easiest route ( I have noticed there is B, S and U ) and how much is the cost of these trains .

Please any help would be so much appreciated..

The train station is about 300-400 m away from the terminal. There is a covered walkway, and also a shuttle bus if you have a lot of luggage.

The easiest route is easy to find using www.fahrinfo-berlin.de (It takes the hotel address too, and finds the nearest station). A ticket from Schoenefeld to any train, subway, tram or bus stop in Berlin costs 2,10 Euro.

I arrived at Schonefeld with my sister and our elderly mum and auntie last Wednesday and although it is cheap on the train they couldn%26#39;t cope with going up and down escalators with cases - which you might also find difficult with a push chair, also there are steps to the outside and no lift in lots of cases We got a taxi from right outside airport doors - very easy. Cost us 41 Euros to Tiergarten so it would be similar to Swiss Hotel. It takes about 30-40 mins depending on traffic.

With a baby, and late at night, why not consider a taxi? It will be about 40 Euros.

Airport Express from Schonfeld to Zoogarden is easy and conveniant.. Takes about 30/40 minutes and is a couple of minutes walk from terminal.

Check this link for times. www.fahrinfo-berlin.de. Buses %26amp; taxis are plentiful at Zoo station.

If you are planning on using public transport a lot then buy a tourist ticket at the Airport Express station which covers all public transport.

Costs about 19euros for 48hrs per adult.

Side trips from Stuttgart

On our 6 day (yes we know -- too short) trip to Germany starting in Cologne, we thought about moving on to Stuttgart to visit Christmas markets and spend 2 days in that city or nearby. Are there other recommended towns accessible by train that might be interesting to visit while we are there and use the Stuttgart area as %26#39;home base%26#39;?

For additional Christmas Markets and things to see two town accessable in 15 minutes by S-bahn stand out: Ludwigsburg with its themed Baroque Christmas Market and Germany%26#39;s largest perfectly preserved Baroque palace with public tours, four museums including an excellent clothing one with lots of clothes from the 1700%26#39;s to present, and extensive gardens %26quot;Blooming Baroque%26quot; which won%26#39;t be at their best this time of year; and Esslingen with its themed Medieval %26amp; Christmas Market set amidst the Altstadt of this excellently preserved medieval city. Also, most town at the end of the S-bahn lines are worth a visit of a few hours, such as the German poet%26#39;s Schiller%26#39;s home town of Marbach or the astronomer Keppler%26#39;s home town of Weil der Stadt. I always enjoy visiting the nearby old college town of Tuebingen, and two nice small towns north of Stuttgart are Besigheim and Lauffen, the latter having a small completely walled Altstadt.

There are also many things to see and do in Stuttgart itself. I recommend visiting the tourist information office across from the train station and getting a free map (among other materials) which has a suggested self guided walking tour of the central area, and they also sponsor city tours by foot or bus. Wilhelma is Europe%26#39;s largest combination zoo-botanical garden set amidst the nice Moorish architecture of this former palace; Europe%26#39;s second largest mineral waters and associated spas can be enjoyed including a swim in bubbly carbonated water at the Leuze one. The new Mercedes Benz museum should not be missed and is loved by vistors of any age, male or female. The TV tower is the world%26#39;s oldest such structure and has a viewing platform and is a good area to go to for snow as it sits high above the warmer valley floor. For art, there is the Staatsgallerie and Stuttgart has many other good museums including the excellent Museum am Loewentor with its collection of local fossils, mostly of dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals, plus a nice amber collection with all kinds of small creature embedded inside.

That%26#39;s well over a week%26#39;s worth of things to do, so you should be easily able to pick several days of activities from the suggestions.

I definatly recommend Ludwigsburg as well. The castle is beautiful and once a day they have an English tour. It is only like 5 Euros a person (vs. 14 or so for Neuschwanstein in Bavaria) and they show you everything!

As to the cost of the palace in Ludwigsburg, there are a number of different ticket options for the palace tour, touring the out lying small Favorite palace, the extensive gardens (Blooming Baroque), and the four museums inside the palace. You can pay for and visit all on a more expensive all inclusive ticket (which you won%26#39;t have time to do everything in a day) or pick a less expensive option that includes what you are interested in doing. The palace tour is well worth doing with visits to the king%26#39;s and queen%26#39;s chambers, as well as the older hunting lodge part of the palace used by the dukes. Our English language tour in November took over an hour, and there were tours in English then at 11 and 13:30, but check with them before going. If you also have a ticket for the museums, the excellent one with extensive clothing from the 1700%26#39;s to present entrance is where the tour ends. Ludwigsburg porcellan is still manufactured at the palace and can be purchased there or you can have porcellan made to order. The ceramics museum is quite nice and includes the apartments of one of the dukes. The Italian restaurant across the street from the palace is a nice place to eat.

Dusseldorf and Munic for the Holidays...is it a good choice?

Hi I am a bit worried...my b/f and I have been planning this wonderful winter trip around europe starting with Paris.. going on to Venice then Rome...then Dusseldorf...then Munich. Now i hear about terrible snow stroms stopping everything in germany especially in munich. I need to know should i change my route...or will germany be a good option? I am really look fw to it, i am just scared we will be snowed in an airport or train station and not enjoy a thing...some tips would be great!!

Can't decide which hotel closer to town/better for kids

Hello,

I am trying to finilize some plans. I am considering three hotels.

The arabella sheraton, the Derag Maximillian, or the Holiday Inn.

The Derag includes breakfast which is a plus.

We are a small family of 6, planning on get two rooms (3 to a room)

I thought a king bed in each room should do fine. But because it is hard for the little ones to walk, I really need to be close to restuarants and the christmas market area.

I do not have rowdy children, very well behaved and used to nice hotels.

A comfortable bed is really important for my sensitive back.

Any help with additional info about these choices would be greatly, gratly appreciated!!

All three are pretty new hotels.

Holiday Inn Nürnberg City Centre is just inside the old town (city walls).

~ 1 km to the Christmas Market

ArabellaSheraton Hotel Carlton is next to the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station), just outside the city walls

~ 1 km to the Christmas Market

Derag Hotel Maximilian is a bit further outside the city walls but more quiet than the Hauptbahnhof area.

~ 1,5 km to the Christmas Market

Of the three hotels, do they all have restuarants next to them. The sheraton (in particular) is priced without breakfast, so I would be in need of a very close breakfast restaurant for the kids. I read the buffet is great but quite expensive. Same with the Holiday Inn.

The Derag is a great price, but there is only one review, so I am uncertain?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

New Years Eve

We will be in Berchtesgaden from Dec 30, 2006 thru Jan 1, 2207.

I thought I once read about a special midnight celebration in the mountains, welcoming the new year.

So far, I can find no information.

Beer help

My daughter and I stayed at the Tryp Hotel in Paul Heyser Strasse in October. In the minibar in our room was this realy excellent beer which I have forgotten the name of. All I remember is that it began with a %26quot;V%26quot;. I have tried asking the hotel by e mail but have received no answer. If anyone can tell me what it is called I would be really grateful. Thanks very much.

Volksfestbier would be the mostlikely one in October, as this is the beer of the season brewed for the beer festivals. Nearly all breweries running a tent on one of the beer festivals will have such a beer in their product list in autumn. Generally less strong than the normal beer (thus the guest can drink more, i.e. higher turnover). But otherwise quite different from brewery to brewery.

%26quot;V%26quot; is not the most common letter in Germany. From the breweries in Bavaria this could be:

Veldensteiner XY

Viechtacher XY

Valley XY

(XY for the type of beer, e.g. Lager, Pils etc.)

Than there is Veltins. One of the biggest breweries in Germany.

But this brewery is from the Sauerland. Not from Bavaria. Normally Veltins is not considered as drinkable in Bavaria. Would at least explain why the hotel won%26#39;t admit that the have Veltins in the minibar.

Thanks abalda - It was definately the name of a beer rather than a generic term. Veltins is the closest to what I remember but I now have in my mind something like Veltners or Vetners. I%26#39;ll google %26quot;Veltins%26quot; and see if I can see a picture of a bottle maybe that will jog my memory. FD

Cologne City Train

Does anyone know how much a month (30 day) city train/transportation pass costs for an adult from Ehrenfeld, to the Max Planck Institutue or the city center?

To qualify for student rates, do you have to be a student of a German institution?

A monthly ticket (calendar month - not 30 days) is EUR 70,30 for all of Cologne.

The VRS has some info in English, but not really about these types of tickets.

This is a ticket a company buys for all employees at a location.

The student ID of students at Cologne and area insitutions is also good as public transport area for one term (6 months).

Apart from this there are no discounts for %26quot;other%26quot; students.

But you%26#39;re normally not a student if working for a Max-Planck-Institute. Even if this is just a working placement or similar. Don%26#39;t know if the Max-Planck-Institute in Cologne take offer JobTickets for their employees.

JobTicket and SemesterTicket are considerably cheaper than normal monthly tickets and cover also the whole VRS area - not just one or more zones.

Cologne - surrounding areas to visit

Will be in cologne for a week - we would like to stay for 2 days and take a train to another area - either in Germany or elsewhere. We were thinking of Paris but if anyone has other suggestions please let me know.

There are lots of places to visit around: Luxemburg, Brussel, Amsterdam, castles - all of them are 2hrs by bus

I.e. do you look for day trips or places to visit after Cologne.

Paris makes only sense if you go there for the remaining 4-5 days of the week.

hostels in winter

I%26#39;m trying to decide between staying at a hostel or a hotel in early January. The hostel is David%26#39;s Cosy Hostel near the Birkenstrasse stop (in Tiergarten I think). I am traveling alone, it seems friendly and the price is definitely right. I don%26#39;t mind a hostel type accomodation as long as there is good heat and hot showers. Has anyone else had experience with Berlin hostels or this one in particular in winter? One I stayed in Ireland in the spring was chilly, but a friend said she had no problems at one in Munich in the winter.

There is a third and cheaper option. Look at www.couchsurfing.com and www.hospitalityclub.com. I cant recommend them from personal experience but I think a lot of people would.

Don%26#39;t know the hostel you mentioned. There are so many in Berlin.

But you won%26#39;t run into problems with

From what I%26#39;ve seen personally (The Circus, EastSeven) the standard of the Berlin hostels is very high.

Eating / sightseeing in Hamburg 27th December 3 nights

can anyone recommend italian restaurants or nice steak houses, also what sights are recomended and is there anything in patricular happening 27th to 29th december.

you%26#39;ll see the addresses of the different Block House Restaurants in Hamburg. The ones in Gänsemarkt are kind of in the city centre.

I can%26#39;t really say anything about good Italian restaurants. There is one inside the Levantehaus (http://www.levantehaus.com/) which is a shopping centre, where you can good meals but it%26#39;s nothing special:

There is also one in the new shopping centre, the Europa passage but I haven%26#39;t been there yet.

For sights that are recommended, just have a look at this forum. There were already a couple of threads about sight seeing in Hamburg.

Hi Stephen

We have just returned from a two night stay in Hamburg. There are a few nice restraunts upstairs in the Gansemarkt passage - Baan Thai, steak restraunt, an italian, a chinese and a bistro. We ate in the Italian €47 for four main courses, three beers, two cokes, a brandy and a cappucino. The first night we ate in CHA CHA a thai restraunt, there are two in Hamburg one upstairs in Europa Passage and one in Hamburger Hof.

We were there for the Xmas markets which finish on 23rd Dec. We went to see Rathaus - city hall and St. Michaelis church which were good. Plenty of shopping. We didnt get to see Reeperbahn or the Speicherstadt, so cant comment on them. There are plenty of trains out of Hamburg, Lubeck is supposed to be worth a visit
